+1 - as VW would have to provide a readout (either digital or analogue) if the car were ever used on the continent... Most other makes of course have the kmh within the same analogue dial.

Also, imagine the amount of people taking VAG to court as they did not have kmh on there display when driving on the continent. ( speed cameras etc...)

You can change it by using VCDS to change the cars country of use. I doubt you should for legal/insurance reasons as I believe we are required to have kph on our clocks by law.

If you turn on your car and if you push for some seconds the trip reset button on the right of your dash (near the wrench button) there will be 2 action:
trip reset and speed change from km/h to mph.
You will notice it when you will drive your car, trip display will show your speed as soon as you are driving.
This setup is not permanent. To have it so you have to use vag.

    Have a nice day.

i have controls on my steering wheel, and if you go from there in to the menu, choose unit/distance-consum and after km/l.these will change the mileage you've done into km plus the trip mileage into km.i don't know how is with the other models but i guess is the same computer menu.

This guy on the Golf MK6 forum has done something similar and now has large MPH readout on the MFD.

I would assume the Passat setting is the same.
