Help please, my A4 Audi 2000 (diesel, 110bph, auto) runs great, then suddenly the revs go to tick over. This happened at 80mph at full throttle, then nothing. Pull up, engine at runs 800rpm, pedal does nothing. Switch off, switch on, drive away all OK.
A few days later, gently approach a roundabout, caught out by traffic and I have to floor it, then same thing, pedal does nothing, revs at 800rpm, I pull up turn, igntion off/on, car drive off fine, I try to repeat the fault by some throttle use, but I can't.

    Help!

Please excuse the selling and grammar, I had a stroke and can't spell any more

BTW your spelling is fine , i didn't even notice one mistake

As yours is an AUTO it could have something to do with a faulty kick-down switch. When you very suddenly go to full throttle from a normal/low throttle position with an AUTO gearbox, a switch is activated which tells the box to drop a couple of gears to help you on your way. This may be malfunctioning somehow and instead tells the engine management to go into what sounds like a safe mode from what your saying.

I've never had an auto so i'm not really used to these types of problems.

Hopefully this will get the ball rolling on some ideas from some people who know a bit more than myself.

Cheers Shanemcconn, thank God for spelling checker!
This problem is instant. There is no limp, the engine speed suddenly drops to tickover. No warning . Reading Hayes I found a "accelerator position sender", in the wiring diagram, this thing has a switch in it. In the autobox the switch is enabled, link 5-62. (in the manual it is disable,) The link is to 62 on the Diesel injection control unit . Maybe is switch tell the injector pump to switch off somehow. I wonder, remove 5-62 link? What is the worst might happen? Not laugh.

    Any idea? Anybody?

    Cheers

    Steve

Right, i don't really know about any of that is about . The post before mine from fourringsrus seems like a good avenue to try in relation to your problem.

    Good Luck.

I read off the 'limp mode' but what is 'limp mode'? I think it so you get you home but slowly. My fault is at tickover, you can not get home at tickover.
The engine just goes to 800rpm and stays there, Everything works but the acceraltor. Switch off/on OK.

300miles after a new air fliter no prober, so far! I read the air fliter should be very clean, it was not. Could it so easy?

Get a vag com scan, a code should be stored relating to the problem, without it your just guessing and may end up spending money on unnecessary parts
I'm sure if you ask theres someone local to you with it.
