    Hi,

i have a 58 plate 2.0 tdi Golf which makes a droning noise when setting off and turning left at the same time.
The car has covered 24,000 miles and does not make this noise if already rolling and turning left.
Any ideas please before i go to the dealers.

    Hi,

Been and had the steering rack changed today at main dealer, but the humming noise is still there, they now think it could be a wheel bearing.
    Anyone got any ideas?

Just turn right when you set off.

You should have the cv joints checked out, i would be surpsised if one of the wheel bearings was faulty if you are only getting this noise at relatively low speed ( ie pulling off? )
A rumbling/clicking noise when pulling away and turning at the same time is a classic sign of a worn cv joint.
    Hope this helps....

    Phil.

Thanks for the reply Phijobo, i have completed some tests this morning to try and eliminate a few things:
    1. If you set off in gear and turn left on the flat you get the humming noise.
    2. If you set off in gear on the flat and turn left up a ramp the noise is worse.
    3. If you set off facing downhill in gear and turn left i can't hear the noise.
    4. If you set off in gear uphill and turn left the noise is worse.
    5. If you are rolling and you dip the clutch or put into neutral and turn sharp left or right there is no noise, and this is the same on the flat,or uphill or downhill.
The above test leads me to suspect there may be a transmission fault somewhere as the fault is only apparent when in gear and under load such as setting off uphill and turning on some steering lock.

The test's you have carried out still point towards a worn/faulty cv joint, if the joint is worn you will usualy only hear a noise from it when under load (ie being driven) and when turning, as you explain that the noise is worse when you are going up a ramp or uphill, this is because the cv joint is under more load and so the noise is more apparent, when coasting or rolling the load is off the joint so the noise will die down and not be so apparent.
The rule usualy goes if the noise is there when turning left then the left joint is worn, right then its the right hand side joint.
I would be very doubtfull of a transmision/gearbox fault, ive had a few vw's and they have pretty much all had cv joint problems which required new joints, i had an 01 passat that went through cv joints for fun!
If possible have a look under the car and check that the cv boots are in place and still in one piece and holding the grease in the boot.
let me know how you get on buddy.

    Phil.

    Hi Guy's,

There is a noise when turning right but no where near as bad as when turning left.
I will have a look at the CV joint boots but i would have thought that the main dealer would have checked for this before changing the rack last week.

I wonder if the alternator belt is jumping around under load from the heavier current draw on lock. You could try getting someone to watch the belt and tensioner with the bonnet up whilst you move off but you must take care when doing this and only on non public roads.

    Guys,

have checked the CV joint boots and are all fine, and i managed to check the alternator belt as Crasher described with someone sat on the front of the car but nothing seemed out of the ordinary so will probably have to wait and see what the dealer says in two weeks when they have another look.
