I would be interested to know if it is possible to carry out a throttle body adaptation and/or engine idle speed adjustment using the vag com 409.1 full version with a third party cable (from Gendan Automotives). My vehicle is a 1999 Passat 1.8 SE Estate.

I understand that the free version of 409.1 has only limited functions but it does enable you to read and clear engine fault codes. Is this true or are only certain codes read and cleared?

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your prompt reply. Does the right-hand column of the vag-com function chart refer to release 908 only (as I suspect it does) or does it also include functions relating to the full version of 409.1 ( ie when $99.00 licence fee paid)?

The reason I'm asking is that the middle column refers to shareware versions 311 and 409.1 but makes no mention of the functions available for the full version.

Perhaps you could clarify this for me before I go down the $99.00 route.

I appreciate your help in this matter.

The major functions are as listed. There are some new features in 908 that are not in 6 year old software - 409. For instance, 409 does not support drop down selectable output tests. If you look at each function in the online manual, at the end of the funtion section in the manual, a statement about the shareware vs full function is made. I'm not going to take the time to indicate the details on a full function 409 version versus the 409 shareware. I was hoping I could find the 6 year old function table for you but .....

I'll take a look at the office tomorrow.

Thanks for your input. After carrying out some further research, I took the plunge and paid out the $99.00 for the full version licence. I have now successfully managed to perform a throttle body adaptation on my Passat B5 using the software - the throttle body settings having been 'lost' following a recent flat battery/ jump-start scenario. The full version appears to have sufficient features/functionality for my purposes - I'm impressed!

Incidentally, before purchasing the licence, I came across the following information in the Seat Cupra.net forum which I found useful and which might be of use to others in a similar position to the one that I was in:

    Shareware:

    - Cannot do Auto-Scan
    - Won't display Text for all Fault Codes
    - No Basic Settings (so no TBA, Xenon levelling, etc or checking timing on TDI's)
    - No Adaptation Saving (so no changing of locking/lights/horn behavior)
    - No Output Tests
    - No Tech Support from Ross-Tech

Limitations of 311 and 409 even if Fully Registered:

    - No Generic OBD-II
    - Won't work with CAN-Bus vehicles
    - Fewer fault code definitions and label files
    - No built-in Activation (you'll be limited to a single PC)
    - No Advanced Measuring Blocks
    - No Direct Access for Adaptation and Basic Setting
    - No Acceleration Measurement
    - No Automated Service Reset
    - No Session Log Capabilities
    - No Support for Guided Readiness Scripts
    - No Optical Bus Diagnosis
    - No Battery/Gateway Coding/Long Coding Assistant
    - No (Automatic) Updates
    - No ECU Mileage Reading (EDC15/16)
    - No Support for Windows Vista and Windows 7

...and some more minor things as well.
