I've had my 57 Passat for about 3 weeks. I've just realised that the security code for the radio (MFD2) did not come with the car.
I spoke with the supplying dealer and they told me that security codes don't get shipped with cars and haven't for several years. Codes are only needed if the radio is swapped to another car - which is my plan!
They told me to bring the car in as the car has to connect to Germany and then they can give me the code. Unfortunately I live a long way from the dealer so would have to get my local dealer to do this - for which I suppose they'll charge.

Is the part about the code true?

I thought they would be able to look it up using the serial number of the radio and/or the VIN.

Have you checked the handbook. It might be on a sticker in the handbook or service book. Dealers haven't been able to get vehicle data for years. I think that even includes radio codes.

Unfortunately it's not in the handbook or service book.

It says it has to go to the dealer on the VW website. However there are people on ebay who can do the job.

I certainly got a little card with the code on it with my 2006 model - actually, I think it was manufactured in 2005 - but not sure if this still happens.

I don't think the code would have been in the handbook though, because the card says it shouldn't be kept in the vehicle, whereas the handbook is designed to be kept there.

Ben Wardle at Shark Performance (www.sharkperformance.co.uk) in Mansfield can do this sort of thing, as can Eddy at Alfaman Services (www.alfamanservices.co.uk) which I think is somewhere in north London.

Shouldn't be a problem, iirc the radio is hard coded to the car, so in the event of a flat battery, it simply resets itself after 5 minutes.

Mine came with the car, in the handbook (since been removed!!). Must admit, I thought it was standard to supply with vehicle. Did you buy from dealer or privately?
