Hi there, i have a problem with an Audi A4 1.8T Quattro Cabriolet 2004, I read a lot of different threads with regards to Whirring noises on Audis and i have yet to find a answer to my problem which is as follows

Whilst driving from about 30mph and on i get a whirring noise which sounds like it is coming from the front end, this happens whether im in gear or coasting in netrual clutch in or out, Air con off/on it doesnt change, but does get louder the faster you get. if you are stationary there is no whirring at all.

Other threads point towards the wheel bearings which have all been changed, so can rule this out, tyres have been cheaked and tried a different set but made no difference.

There is a very light vibration through the steering wheel and pedals on idle to about 1700rpm, which may not be related to the main problem.

Also again think is un related but the heater does blow hot air in the middle vents and cold on the outside ones which does point towards a problem pump valve unit or servos

Please can anyone HELP me it driving me mad!!!!!

To me mate, the way you have explained it here, it sounds as if your turbo is on its way out , i just purchase my first audi a4 130bhp the other night and mines had this noise aswell, two hours later the turbo blew.

You can just image how i was feeling.

    Get your turbo checked mate

I would tend to agree with a Gearbox bearing/Diff Bearing problem from what you describe.

Just an update, it turns out it is a problem with worn bearing in the diff which is part of the gearbox costing about 1k to rebuild gearbox!

The car has only done 75k (correct mileage full Audi service history) and am unsure how common this problem is, but i feel Audi have got alot to answer for, i might expect this from a higher mileage car but this kind of mileage!!!! is a disgrace||

i am going to write to Audi and see what they say!

Hi, I have just started to note exactly the same thing on my A4, definately transmisison/speed related and nothing to do with engine revs and is there no matter what gear I am in.

Let me know what you find out as teh root cause

Does anyone know how much ish it costs to get pinion bearing replaced? Is it one per side or just one bearing?
