Hi everyone, my Mk 4 golf gt tdi 115 has developed a fault with the single slot cd player. I think its know as the gamma 8 speaker radio/cd/tape (who listens tapes anymore!)

Whenever you put in a cd it simply says 'check magazine'. I have checked threads and cannot see any past topics on this other than ones relating to when people have copied cds and tried to play them.

As all my cds are origional from the shop can anyone help? I had been listening to a cd fine and then tried to skip a track and its came up with the message and refuses to play any cds, despite working fine before, with the same cd.

This was even more annoying as i had a 250mile trip back from Edinburgh!

It does it from cold too. I can only think it could be one of the following:

    • dodgy laser
    • completely knackered unit
you can hear it trying to spin and read even when radio is on and when you press the cd button.

Should i try putting a cd cleaner cd in or just change the unit from one from a scrapper. I am sure there are threads on here on how to do this. Also can you upgrade the single dash mounted cd to a 6cd dash mounted easily?

thanks in advance for any helpful info.

as above, check all wiring, clean the lens and make sure the CDs are clean.

if you find it's faulty, I've got a boot changer from the gamma unit I had.

Thanks chaps, have bought a cd lens cleaner and will give that a go first, i think its more for dvd and home cd players but assume it will have the same effect.

If not, i'll dust off the tools and remove the cd unit itself to check wiring. May have gone over one of the large potholes in the shiite roads near me and dislodged something.

    Cheers

    Update:

Have pulled out the cd and radio units and checked the wiring. All seems ok but to make sure i disconnected everything, powered down and reconnected - this has made no difference so i can only assume i need a new cd unit.

I'm told by VW i am looking at around £200 for a new single cd unit which im not willing to pay. Rather than go to halfords and get an aftermarket player for £100 and ruin the origionality/appearance (somehting id like to keep) and having to search for carpeted inlays (vw radio would need to be removed as well) for the space where cd player was, i notice there are a couple knocking about on ebay....

There are plenty of 6cd front loading cd players but hardly any single. Does anyone know if you can simply plug in and go with a 6cd changer even if origionally it was a single cd? Do you have to buy the same radio element as the doner cd changer?

What a nightmare, cant stand driving around without any music, it always happens when you have a long journey!
