    All,

Can anyone tell me the correct procedure for changing my coolant on a 2002 A4 1.8t AVJ engine.

Ive seen a lot of stuff on the net abt this, but there are a lot of contradictions too.

Got car back from a local mechanic after a stat change, but to my horror found out he used no coolant, just water!!!!

Not going to go back there (long story) so basically looking for a full complete start to finish procedure, pics would be great.

I have purchased 2 leters of pink fluid from halfords. fluid meets requirements for (audi TL7740). Also can i use tap water?

All info and advice, greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

Open the cover of the coolant expansion tank Pull off the bottom coolant hose retaining clip and remove coolant hose from the radiator or
When the bumper is removed from the vehicle, coolant can also be drained from the radiator via a drain screw Without removing the thermostat, you will not be able to drain some of the coolant in the block, but as this is a lot of extra work i would not worry too much about it unless the coolant is excessively contaminated. When filling the system pull back the hose to the heater matrix and a small hole will appear, fill the coolant in the header tank when the coolant runs out of the hole bubble free, replace the hose and Bob's your uncle

    Tks Kenny,

Just a few questions you might be able to answer.
Gonna go with draining the rad, as the other method is a lot of work.

    1. Where is the rad drain plug and what does it look like.

    2. can i use tap water, was going to go 1 to 1 with the coolant type stated in first post.

    3. when bleeding the system, do I have to have the climate control on full heat and power

    4. Is there a bleed screw(s), and if so where is it and do I need to use it.

    5. Do I have the expansion cap on or off while bleeding the system.

    6. How much fluid should the system take.

sor for all the questions, but would like to get this right first time

If its got water in it, then I'd just bang the antifreeze in!! Drain the same amount of water as you have antifreeze, tip it in the header tank, run the engine up to temperature. Once the thermostat opens and all the coolant circulates it'll mix in nicely. Tap water if fine, alot of people go very OTT and used de-ironised water, but theres no difference. All it does is keep the engine nice and cool....they all rust inside eventually!!!

    1. Where is the rad drain plug and what does it look like. Bottom right hand side of the rad, its ususally red with a huge phillips screw driver appature.

    2. can i use tap water, was going to go 1 to 1 with the coolant type stated in first post. Tap water is fine

    3. when bleeding the system, do I have to have the climate control on full heat and power. Nope

    4. Is there a bleed screw(s), and if so where is it and do I need to use it. Nope taking the top off the header tank is just fine

    5. Do I have the expansion cap on or off while bleeding the system. As above, off

    6. How much fluid should the system take. Between the minimum and maximum marks on the tank AFTER BLEEDING

sor for all the questions, but would like to get this right first time

    Cheers audi A4 lover,

    just one final question.

    1. Considering there is all water now in my system, how much water should I drain out to have a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze.
