Hi all, new to the joys of Audi ownership, I've just bought an A4 Avant 1.9TDI SE 110 with 182,000miles, it has a full service history and runs superbly, however my question is this, what kind of mileage could I resonably expect from one of these engines before major work is likely, I understand there are many variables but does anyone know of any with big mileages? Also could anyone recommend the best type of engine oil for this engine. Sorry about the huge ramble.

If it is looked after it should go on and on.

There is a thread on here asking "who has the highest milage..."

Some on their are reported to be at 300k+

im looking at a 1.9 with 174k on it the guys said it is starting to drink a lot of oil although there are no signs of leaks or excessive smoke, is it anything to worry about? i had a 07 plate pasatt 1.9 from new and that drank at least a 1ltr between services

If it is a 1.9 VE engine (90/110) and is starting to drink oil, it could be turbo or head or piston wear starting to show.

I would probably steer clear of it, especially as you can get a decent 110 for £600 these days.

The engine is extremely durable, with many people having done over a million miles on the same engine.

In billions of years, when our sun starts to expand, the giant ants that rule the earth will make shelters out of the 1.9tdi engines that cover the surface of the planet.

lol very good, i have now brought the car the previous owner didnt know a great deal and after driving it i was more then happy, its so quite in the cabin and only kicks out black smoke when you boot it, no smoke on cold start up it did look like it had a little oil leak as the undertray was oily but he said he has never seen oil on the drive. it has a full Audi service history upto 155K (currently 173K) he has but .8ltr in it since the last service so i wouldn't call that excesive
just been looking at insurance and it is saying its the 110bhp so again looks like the owner got this wrong

Neighbour next door's son has a w reg a4 1.9 tdi with 350K+ miles on the clock... Missus AVG engined passat(similar engine) is on 170k wich is nothing, starts with no smoke and returns over 60Mpg. To note is that i have rebuilt the engine due to cambelt failure at 142k and there was absolute no wear and the factory honning marks were clearly visible. The valves were mashed up but no dammage to the pistons and its started right away after rebuild. The best engines VAG built so far, simple and reliable.
