Hi I just bought an 51 plate Audi A4 1.9 tdi b6 model. The speedometer does not work and is constantly on zero and the fuel gauge fluctuates while driving. Also the odometer is stuck on 123122 miles.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm a student and live in London so budget tight, if anyone can recommended a mechanic who doesn't charge an arm and a leg would be a great help too.

Got a diagnostics done found the following faults

16885 - Vehicle Speed Densor: Implausible Signal

    17965 - Charge Pressure Control: Positive Deviation‎

Also noticed that the turbo is in limp mode i dunno if its a bad remap if it has had one or if there is an actual problem with the turbo.

    Please help!

16885 - It's also called the crank sensor, about £30ish (I think) Goes into the engine. Never changed one myself, so can't be of more help. I expect this is what makes the speedo not work too, though the fuel thing is also a fairly common problem and you can get the fuel gauge separately. It's easy to fit.

17965 - Is it remapped? As the remap would be causing this and the limp mode. My olf MkIV Golf had this all the way through my ownership and only got limp mode once in a while. I'd get the map taken off, then save for a new one from a company you trust (do some research)

If you get the crank sensor fixed and the speedo doen't work, I have a spare one knocking about that you can buy off me if you need it.

Thanks for your help really appreciate it, i dont think its the cluster because when i got the diognostics done the guy managed tomove the needle with the computer, i just bought a crank sensor, although audi couldnt tell me for sure if it was the crank or cam sensor.

How will i get the fuel gauge fixed? the guy i took it to told em it might be something inside the tank that measures the fuel and it was apparently expensive to fix.

    thanks again for your help

I had the same problem with my fuel gauge, it turned out to be the fuel sender unit, which is located somewhere in the tank inside the boot. I think I was charged £129 from a specialist.

o yeah forgot to mention i cannot say for sure if its been remapped. i only assumed it has been as its very slow under 2000 revs and my old 100bhp audi was faster than this 130. the guy thought turbo might be blocked or something.

Slow up to 2000 revs - it could be either the EGR valve or the MAF sensor - do a search on here as they're common on the VAG TDI engines.

Wouldn't a dodgy fuel sender come up as a fault too Zeb?

what did you think the fuel gauge problem was benjie, and what needs to be done to it if your right?

also flat out it wont go above 70-80mph, i dunno if that helps in figuring out the turbo problem.

It's just a known fault that the fuel gauge itself buggers up and you need to take the cluster apart to replace it. Though the problem with the sensor in the fuel tank could equally be the reason...

Is there tons of white/black smoke when you put your foot down?
