took my mk5 gti in for 52k longlife service, but they said mobil 1 ESP wasn't suitable for longlife, either I used their oil or changed to fixed interval. Is this a load of balls, or is it simply not on vw's list?

Who ever told you that is wrong. The Mobil ESP 5w-30 meets both the VW504.00 and VW507.00 spec and this is printed on the back of the can. So, suitable for petrol and diesel (including DPF) VAG's on longlife.

its always cheaper to supply your own oil. Just do the research 1st.

I supplied mine and on the reciept they put 'customer supplied own oil, we suspect wrong oil as it doesn't state longlife' blah blah blah. I did my research i know i was right.
