After reading many posts on this site about dual mass flywheels I thought I'd eventually bite the bullet & have my rattling one replaced; (£630 at a local garage). The car is transformed!!!! Quieter, smoother acceleration (feels quicker), slicker gearchange & lighter clutch pedal. My car has done 81k & it is a shame that such a great car should need such expense at just under 4 years old. However for those of you - & there must be loads, having DMF problems, take my advice; spend the money & start enjoying youtr car again.
P.S. Fuel consumption according to the computer has increased significantly too with the new DMF.

Agree completely - I had the dual mass flywheel replaced with a solid one. It still vibrates very slightly when idling but that's not a problem when I know the cars not shaking itself to bits! And yes, mpg does rise. I got 61mpg out of my 1.9tdi (2005 A4) the other day coming into Birmingham

Can you tell me how you diagnosed that the problem was the DMF. I gave an 05 2.0 Tdi Audi A6 with 83k. Clutch replaced at 13k as a recall. Even after that on 1st gear pull away car easily judders Now car judders in all gears just lately and when cruising with light accelleration in 5th/6th. It's getting worse. What worries me is a costly diagnosis fee and failing repairs such as fuel filter, injectors etc. any help appr.

M car was diagnosed when the cambelt was replaced (the rattle was heard when the belt was off and the engine turned by hand) the rattle/chatter noise from the underneath is quite distinctive - unless you have a BLB engine and have the dreaded oil pump tensioner fault too, but that's a different story......I didn't have any of the faults you mention & personally I don't think the symptoms you describe indicate DMF failure. A diagnostic session just might save you a lot of hassle.
    Good luck!
