By fluke the previous owner had left a 4gb SDHC memory card in the slot.

well i've tried and i cant get the thing to read.

I've reformatted it to FAT32 as per the handbook and i've loaded 1 single song on it and it just sits in the card slot saying 'loading'.

Maybe this is why the previous owner had an ipod lead fitted?

    Any ideas?

It'll never read SDHC cards. They MUST be just SD cards.

    any limit on size?

the handbook says 256mb, which by todays standards is poor and very shortsighted by Audi.

EDIT: i have swaped the 4gb for the standard 2gb out her camera.

I have 4GB ones in mine and they work fine. Formatted to FAT32 as you mention above.

Bear in mind the inherent problem with the RNS-E is that it wont read more than 512 files in total on each card so 2GB is prob the most you will need/be able to use unless your MP3's are recorded at a very high bit rate.

You can put more than 512 tracks on a 2/4GB card of course but the RNS-E will only read the first 512 (400 if they are all in the same folder I believe)

Bear in mind though that the RNS-E is 5 years old now so its not done too badly!

it looks more recent than 5 years. especially the 3d dvd map.

I would of thought a firmware update would cure the limit of 512 tracks. It is 2009 after all.

If they were still in production in current cars then maybe but as they arent I reckon you havent got a chance sadly.

It was first seen in 2004/5 I think so almost 5 years old now. You wont get FW updates for it anymore as development has ceased, along with its use in current Audi cars..

The RNS-E now fitted to the 2010 model year TT, A3 (+R8) is totally different with a high- res screen and other features. They'll play SDHC cards and give full track info from an ipod, cost from £1K+ though. Nothing is interchangeable between them sadly.

4GB works well, but as mentioned above the card MUST be SD, not SDHC. You'll find a few 4GB SD cards, but there's not a lot to choose amongst. Most 1 and 2GB are SD only and will therefor work.

Also, there's not only limitation on number of tracks, but on the file name length as well. I don't remember the number of chars, but it can be pretty long. However some downloaded files sometimes have very long names.
