    Hi,
I've just bought an Avant 1.9tdi 130 on a 2002, 129,000 miles full history. Everything has been good with it until this morning.

When coasting along in low revs, higher gear, just over 1100 rpm, put my foot down to gently acclerate, the expected reliable power/accelartion did not happen. It seemed to bog down for a few seconds before gathering itself and then accelerating.

this now happens regulary, any gear...noticably when I gently pull out of junctions etc.

If I give it some welly it pulls nicely and runs ok but have noticed a little bit of missing sometimes, and I have noticed some noticable turbo lag.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what it might be? I'm working nights so cant really spend a lot of time on it until the weekend, so would like a good starting point to check!

    I'm thinking MAF, turbo wastegate?

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Oh, I'm a new member too!!

    it's 2001 with 80k on it.
may be totally different in yours?

Same here, 2003 A4 130. Turbo does nothing below 1500 and doesn't really wake up until 1700 - 1800. Working as designed I reckon!

It seems I don't have a problem. Car running spot on since I posted question. I think there might still be an issue cause by rain as it was raining badly that day. Anyone know of wet running issues?

The other thing that might be worth trying is running a couple of tankfuls of posh diesel (y'know, BP Ultimate or Shell Superdooperultramax or whatever it's called) or chucking some Millers or similar additive in with your next tankful. The detergents and such should help to clean any muck out of the injector nozzles, which could potentially be contributing to the kind of lag you experienced.

Although I'd second the other comments that the 130pd doesn't really do all that much below 1500rpm... in my experience it's a lot less linear than the old 110 lump, which pulled strongly from 1000rpm all the way to around 3500rpm before running out of puff. But I digress...

Certainly food for thought. I've had the older 110 red eye, followed by the 180 quattro (b6), both superb, both chipped. The 110 responded the best, awesome pull, so I lowered it, upgraded the brakes...for me it was a fantastic car, but I sold it on to get the quattro, then was totally disappointed with the MPG....40 was my best using a feather to push the throttle, coasting a lot and so on. I chopped that in for a bike, but I digress (too) at this point!

The 110 is still going strong now as I sold it to a mate, whos had it for 5 years now....its done 250,000 miles, no shakes no rattles and still returns 60 MPG! Still chipped too.

Been hankering after the Avant, an estate car that goes like a saloon and doesn't really look like and estate, Audi got this one right when it came off the design board. Sadly, it doesn't have the bells and whistles I like, such as cruise, DIS heated mirrors and HID, not even a towbar, so I'll be retro fitting all of that once I'm happy the engine is fine and the MAF performs (read on here how to test it using the ross tech software...which I still have from the previous ownerships of audis). It does have the 'sports' suspension, sadly after having done 128000 miles and me having driven it a couple of hundred now, its obvious its very tired and not as good as it used to be....so anyone got any good experiance with suspension kits...springs and dampers???

Interesting to know if anyone has retro fitted heated mirrors and or folding mirrors....I can get hold of the mirror chassis, but not sure if the loom already has the wiring to utilise.....anyone have any ideas??

Also, any advice on chipping would be good, whats everyone else got? DTUK look favourite, though I have used Upsolute before with great results.

The 110 was a great engine - mine got better at 120,000 miles+, regularly returning 60+mpg

The wiring for the heated mirrors is probably already there, in which case you just need the replacement glass with the element. Replaced one of my (unheated) mirrors when I cracked it and now one side is nice and clear on frosty mornings. Just waiting to crack the other one!

Chippping... several site sponsors do a good job. I've PM'ed you about this too...

That could the turbo actuator solenoid ( I think it's a solenoid) at the front of the engine. If you follow the actuator pipe from the turbo you'll see it runs to the rear of the offside headlight. Ensure it's clean and dry there. If not clean and perhaps protect connections with some diaelectric silicon grease (available from Maplins). People had issues with their car after washing. Water ingress was the issue.

A seb mentioned it's also good to use fuel treatments. I use Forte Diesel treatment. Very good and popular with professional garages,

Thanks for all the advice, Seb; PM'd you back about the box.

Will look at the turbo soleniod and give it a clean anyway. Was definatly a noticable change to the driving characteristics that wet morning, I put most of it down to having worked my 7th 80 hour night shift/week, so was pretty doppy going home. Since then it has not rained and the car performs nicely, much better that the Vectra I had before!

I'll be lobbing some diesel cleaner in it tomorrow, used this with good results...on the Vectra. Once every 20000 miles, perfect running/tickover etc.

Other than that, I'm going to run the VAG software with the running car, check out the MAF....I'm hoping it'll be within spec so I can then get the suspension (and toys) sorted out!

Also, glad to know that heated mirrors will work on the car without much fuss, fleabay have these quite cheap, so I'll get a pair on order.

    Again, thanks for the advice!!!!

Do you know when the last MAF was fitted? As even if VagCom doesn't pick up error code it can still be on the way out, and from what I can gather they are almost a must have item for this engine as they are prone to go abywhere from every 30k onwards. If I where you I'd definately replace it, make sure you DONT get the dealer one as they are sh*ite, source from GSF as they carry genuine Bosch units. I recently had mine done and it both improved acceleration and fuel cosumption

Fuel treatment wise, Millers is what I'd go for. Couple of tanks of double dose should get your injectors nice n clean! After that its up to you if you want to go for the expersive Derv, personally I think I spend too much on fuel already with out adding another £5.85 to a tank of the stuff (V-Power is another 9p a litre) From what I can understand it has more cetane than regular diesel which is the reason it burns better...is this good for your injector seals I wonder? As I know too much bio-ethernol in petrol cars can knacker things up
