I have a 2000 allroad 2.7t with tiptronic gearbox, after driving to work this morning I needed to move the car but the car failed to start. After numerous attempts I eventually got it started by slamming the gear selector up and down through the gears and eventually it started,am I right in thinking there is a safety switch to stop the car being started in D,R or gears 2,3,4 and that this could be faulty?

The starter inhibitor and reversing light relay receives information from the multi-function switch

the switch in question stops the engine turning over. If it was spining then that's not the fault.

Since the engine started after you juggled with the gear selector i'am inclined to think the fault is with the multi-function switch.A fault code read might verify this.I beleive the relay is in position 4 on the relay-box

The fault is pre-set when the ignition is switched on and will be erased when the brake pedal is pressed once, provided that brake light switch -F- is OK You can check the multfunction switch in measured block values address 02 group 004 and display zone 2 and 3 you may need a chart which i can not post so i need your e-mail addreww
