hey, i have a 99 mk4 golf. For a few weeks now i've had difficulty starting the car. A few days ago the car started to cut out as i slowed down-say at traffic lights etc. Yesterday this happened at least ten times in the space of 15 minutes. I won't drive it as it's too dangerous. just went out to check it now, it will start up but cut out while ticking over.Any ideas?

I think it might be an air/ fuel problem but i'm a total novice!!

    1.4/1.6 Engine?

Do you know the engine code?

Seems there are several topics regarding this fault and no definitive solution has been created. I have a 1.4 (AHW) engine suffering from the same thing, however mine only happens perhaps one a month.

When the car cuts out, there are no lights on the dash? As if the car hasn't cut out atall. This basically means that the ECU hasn't realised the car has died atall, which is rather worrying. If there are lights on the dash, then this could point to a throttle body issue, in which case it may need cleaning out, and re-adapting.

My Topic Of The Same Fault, with a few good responses:

Use the force Luke, use the Force! These cars have sophisticated on board diagnostics that log fault codes with almost all problems, don't guess, get it read for codes!!!!

Thanks for the reply imcammers and the other lad. It's a 1.4 16v. When my car cuts out, the lights and everything go, so i'd say we might have a different cause to out problem. I think i'll bring it to a non vw garage and have it put through a computer. Hopefully i won't be **** raped!

I have the same problem with my 1.4, but I've just had mine go in for its MOT, and apart from the usual things that can be fixed (tyres etc..) they are having troubles with the emissions, saying the results are way out, even after i had it serviced.

If I find out the problem within the next few days I'll let you guys know (I just hope its not too costly, student and all that!)
