hi guys im new at this and really need some help please!!!

ive just started having problems when im on the motorway and going at about 80mph and then trying to overtake the van just loses power and goes down to 60mph and then wont pick up speed till i switcg it off and then switch on again..

ive taken it to my mechanic who works at vw and he sed it was overboosting and so thought to change the thrust sensor which cost about £42 from vw and then the problwem went for about 2000miles and jst to my luck has just started again and i wanna know wat can i do to resolve it ... will i need to chancge the maf sensor and clean the egr valave as ive read somewhere that changing the turbo doesnt help at all???

all help welcome asap as im a taxi driver and always doing the airport runs....

I had the same frustrating problem over the past six months. In my case the vehicle went into limp mode after I had done a long run of 100 miles or more. It never happened during local running about.

Because of it's intermittancy the fault was hard to trace, and the ECU showed no record of a fault on diagnostic test. Finally my local dealer came out on an extended road test with his diagnostic equipment. This showed the turbo was "over-boosting". Apparantly because of the over-boosting, the pressure was such that the ECU put the engine into limp mode to protect the engine. When you turn off the ending for a couple of seconds it resets the ECU and off you go again until the boost pressure again becomes excessively high.

I am told, and I only have the dealer's know-how to go by, there are variable vanes in the turbo, and when these stick you get the overboost problem. The turbo was replaced and I have had no further trouble.

Forgive my layman's explanation, but I am not conversant with these modern engines !.

    Hope this helps. Anton Prole.

You may also get overboost conditions if you have any split hoses... my T5 had a split intercooler pipe which caused exactly the same problem.

    Dear Paul,

In my case they checked the pipes - all were ok, but it's certainly the thing to check first before blowing a fortune on a turbo.

    Best wishes, Anton.
