    Hi,
i'v been considering an Audi S4 as my next car and im just wondering which is the better S4 of the two... the V8 or the 2.7 Bi-turbo is it?

anyway if people can say good points and bad points of both or either that would be great!

i'v looked at remapping the 2.7 just so see how it compares to the 4.2 and theres not alot in it but i have a feeling the 4.2 sounds so much nicer :P

    thanks!

Its the B6 for me very time but then I'm biased. Get one stick on a Militek exhaust and you won't be disappointed!

I fancy a facelift B5. I think it has more character than the B6.

B5 is much more tuneable and feels faster than the v8...and its much better looking than the b6 ! There is not much to be gained from the normaly aspirated v8 unless turbocharging it but it does sound amazing !

Thanks for the replies, i'v been messing about with both on gran turismo 4 (yes im sad like that)
i prefere the B5 avante to the saloon tbh but i like the B6 with the two exhaust exits and yes it does sound uber nice, if i get one i dont really want to get the B5 due to the age but it is more tunable being a turbo but tbh i dont know as i could be bothered spending alot of money tuning it.

Atm i have a Volvo (dare i say it) and to remap it they're about £546 then for stage 2 remap with 100cell cat and cat-back it's £1000!

just two more questions, what kind of gains do you get from a high flow cat and stainless exhaust on the 4.2 B6?

also what is the general opinion of them eating sensors and money with electrical problems?

    thanks muchly!

    Hi,

From experience, I'd say that the 4.2 is a very smooth but lazy lump. Because there's a hugely heavy V8 hanging over the front wheels, it kinda messes-up the handling (even with Quattro to straighten things up!)

I'm a fan of turbo'd V6 engines, because they are comparatively light, they "punch above their weight"... and when there are 2 turbo's.. you really start to gain in the power-to-weight ratio.

If money was no object, I'd have the B6 simply because the 4.2 is a fabulous luxury if you can afford to run it (make no mistake, 22mpg tops!) The only thing that puts me off the B5 is that it looks quite dated now.

    Toff.

You'll get around 20-30bhp from a full exhaust system. With a remap as well you can take the V8 to around 390bhp but that is about your lot without forced induction (as if that wasn't enough)! That will cost you around £2.5K. Similarly you could take a B5 up by around 75bhp for the same money.

If you want a spec’d up car best to try and buy one with something like a AmD stage 3 already done as you can get one (if you can find one) for not a lot more than the standard cars. Like has been said though only get one with your eyes open to 22-25mpg and likely big bills for service and repair.

    thanks for the replies,
i'v been noseyin on autotrader at the B5 RS4 (that 380bhp silly avante one) and im quite fancying it in either 6 months or a year depending on hours at work (we had them cut down to 38 but i was on 44 and alot more overtime money)

what mpg does the 2.7 rs4 return average, motorway runs and driving it like a grandad in 40 zone's lol?

    thanks

    Hi,

I believe the RS4 is a big jump up from the S4 in terms of cost to buy, running costs and more importantly insurance.

Obviously you'll need to get it serviced at the prescribed intervals (which I expect are more often than the S4) if you want to protect it's resale value. You'd have to be mad to buy an RS4 with patchy service history!

    I'd stick to the B5 2.7 S4 if I was you.. the B6 V8 S4 and the B5 RS4 requires very deep pockets indeed!

Please take it from me.. these high-end cars are expensive to run. Imagine that you've had 3 bad months at work.. get something you could afford if that where to happen, otherwise you'll end-up having to sell it! Take a look at my car history in my signature for proof of that

It sucks being sensible when there are thoughts of a burbly V8 or a Bi-Turbo V6 in your sights, but if you don't give it some thought, you'll end-up worse off in the long run.

    thanks for the reply Toff,
and yes i have seriously considered the running costs, im just unsure of how often things go wrong on these electrically (i can sort most stuff mechanical) and if it was anything major then it'd atleast go to an audi specialist that came recommended!

i have a volvo S60 atm (the 2.4lpt lump) and it's not bad, group 15 compared to gti's that are 18 and more car for the money! and it does sound nice being a 5 pot

as far as work goes im in quite a good position (compared to alot of people) when im looking at getting it if there's any doubt about not being able to afford it then i simply wont get one and i'v calculated being able to afford it from my minimum hours so no potential overtime money loses

thanks for the reply again Toff

    Alex
