    Hi all
I've been reading and googling all over the web for egr related advice and have come away a bit confused!
The 'emissions workshop!' light recently came on so I asked the mech's to see what the fault code was while in for a service, the verdict was the egr needed replacing at a cost of £300, after hunting around it quickly became apparent that this is quite a common problem!
Solutions so far seem to be:
    1) replace the egr and expect it to need sorting again in the future, I can't find anyone selling these to do this myself tho and £300 seems steep to me if one of the following works..
    2) Give it and probably/possibly the intake manifold a good clean to get rid of the gunk and this should sort the problem if blocked.
    3) Whack the egr with a hammer(!) or 'flutter' the valve using vag-com to see if it's sticking!
    4) Delete the egr with one of these http://www.egrvalve.co.uk/index.php?...kes-and-Models then get the warning light mapped out.
    5) Fit a provent/catch can if the decision to keep the egr is made to help prevent the problem occuring in the future.

All of the above solutions are scattered around on the t'internet, mainly however for mkIV's not mk V's, so my questions for all the egr guru's are:
    1) Which is the best option!?
    2) If I go down the delete route several posts seem to indicate this is not 'ideal' on a mkv and will result in excessive temps and roughness, also that it's not possible to use vag-com to remove the egr warning, and may not even be possible with a remap. Has anyone actually deleted the egr on a mkv?

ta very much for any advice!
    c

    Hi

Haven't really got any more info than in my original post. I have removed and cleaned my egr but the warning light has remained on. I've tried disconnecting the battery to clear the fault codes but this didn't work so I'm presuming it is an actual faulty egr valve instead of just being gunked up. It actually wasn't that bad anyway.

I'm about to order a replacement from vw which is £75ish plus vat which will hopefully sort the problem. It's an easy enough job to remove/replace the egr so i'm gonna do it myself.

In all of the info I've found you can't use vag-com to disable the warning light if you delete the egr on a mk VI golf. It can be done with a full remap however.

I've been running mine with the warning lamp on with a presumably faulty egr valve and there hasn't been any adverse effects so i'm guessing it'll run fine with a delete kit, just the warning lamp is the issue.

    hope this helps

    c

What was the fault code number?

The EGR valves aren’t that prone to failure but the anti shudder flap immediately after the EGR valve is.

Not sure. It was a verbal ' you have a faulty egr valve' while it was in for a service. I haven't got a vag-com or know of anyone near keswick in the Lakes to read the codes myself.

Am I right in thinking it's all one unit with the anti shudder valve included? It certainly isn't shuddering when I turn off the engine.

The egr and inlet manifold flap (anti shudder valve ) are separate, check number 8 fuse in the fuse box next to the battery see if its blown, check this thread out https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...ad.php?t=27988

    Thanks for that,

The plot thickens. Fuse 8 is indeed blown. And replacing it blows the new fuse straight away. (plus I've now got no wipers as I used that fuse as a quick check, plus my airbag warning light started to come on a few days ago! it's like a audio/visual treat when I turn the key!)

So it looks like the anti shudder valve/inlet manifold flap might be to blame. As it looks like it's a way more expensive part than a new egr thats a pain!

Is there a way to double check it's definitely the shudder valve? The link you posted suggested popping off a pipe and seeing if there was movement. Where about is it? Is there a pic anywhere with a big obvious arrow pointing at the anti shudder valve?

    Cheers

If the fuse blows, you need an anti shudder flap motor unit. These are available from places like GSF and ECP in the Pierburg brand as original.

You can try disconnecting the wiring connection to the anti shudder valve and replace fuse 8 if it does'nt blow thats the problem, there's a very slim chance of runaway engine, but if its knackered anyway your exposed to this danger now ! but the chance's of this happening are very, very slim . this procedure will bring up the emmissions workshop alarm but I think you said it was already up .
