No I don't mean you Army tank, your petrol tank

Since I switched from a Pug 307 1.6, which cost me £53 to fill and barley touched 300 miles, I've been happy with the Golf.

The MAF sensor needs replacing ( waiting for pay day ) so the MPG may be slightly out, but my GT TDI takes £41 to fill ( with around £5 in the red so to speak ) and I get around 410 miles from that.

I do have a heavy right foot aswell, so to me 400+ miles off £40 quid is excellent compared to £55 and 280/300 miles from my old car.

I do mainly motoway driving and cover around 800 / 1000 miles a month.

What do you get from your tanks ?

    I drive a Bora, PD 100.

Every time i fill up, it's seems to take just over £45 quid from the top of the red. That'll get me around 500 miles depending on how i drive.

I've drove like a nun once and managed 720 miles. (combined motorway and urban)

I do about the same milage as you because of work..... sometimes more.

At the minute, i'm in Anglesey twice a week. Its a good 250 mile round trip on it's own.....

I'v got an 03 Gt Tdi 130pd and from the nice little message asking to fill up it will take £43 and i can get up to 550 miles obviously depending on my right boot. I'd say a 450 mile average?

So much better than the Fiesta Si i had before, that was £35 and 250 miles!!

I get about 420 for £45 from my TDi 150 which i'm more than happy with. My last car was an EVO 5 and it did about 120 to a tank of optimax.
Ex Golf GT TDi 150. Then an Evo 8. Then a Honda S2000. Now an Evo 5 (and a little pug 106)

I get about 370 - 380 for a tank full (about 70 mile a day covering motorway and b roads) thats on a 2.0 GTi though - was hoping I'd get a bit more than that though (but seems to average 38-39 mpg for the daily run)

I get about 420-450miles from my VW Golf TDi 115bhp. Most local mileage with a little motorway. Tends to show on average of 45mpg for the mileage on the trip computer. Oh, and the full tank is £45 diesel.

If i'm doing motorway mileage and keep my average speed on the good side of 80mph, i can average about 600 miles from my tank (115bhp gt tdi) during the week, around town, i probably average about 500 a tank.... i never really run it empty though, i only ever go to about half a tank....

on a recent run to lincolnshire and back (365 miles) i managed to use 34.08 litres (£32) which in real life means an average of about 48/49 mpg... not at all bad considering i was doing 80/85 for 250 of those miles

does yours only take £45 to fill up? hmm...maybe the fuel is cheaper around your end?

I rarely let the fuel light come on, and tend to top up just after it falls below the quarter mark, so I should still have about £10 fuel in the tank, before I top up again.

I used to let my old Golf (1.6 SE) run very low on fuel before I top up, but had bad problems with the engine stalling out on low revs (similar topic here), and was told by garages that it may be the fact that the fuel tank has let all the "crap" through the system and messed the engine, etc. Is it true that the fuel tank has crap building up in it over time, which can mess the system?

You are correct, over time there will be crap in the fuel which settled on the bottom of the tank. If you run it on the red pushing is, the fuel pump will drag a lot of the crap up from the bottom of the tank and pump into the engine. nothing serious, but it doesn't do the engine any good.
