Indeed. I personally use Castrol Edge in my Passat.

If you buy it from Opie Oils (link from this website) you get a forum member discount.

No, that is an old spec for pre 2000 diesels. viz.

    (From Opie Oils website)
The oils in this section meet the the VW 505.00 specification; the oldest VW specification for diesel cars. Now only really relevant only to pre 2000 diesel cars (with or without turbocharger). For diesels from 2000 onwards, the VW 505.00 specification has largely been superceded by the 505.01, 506.00, 506.01 and 507.00 specifications.

No Ritchie, Magnatec is not OK.

You must use a 507.00 oil for a newish Passat. This is a 5W-30 full synthetic oil. I use Castrol Edge 5W-30.

On older diesel Passats you can use a 505.01 spec oil, 505.00 is not to be used!

Agreed. TDIs are pretty fussy about what they like to drink, unlike me!

TDI engines with a DPF need 507.00. Incidentally, as far as I'm aware, VW 507.00 supercedes all previous spec TDI oils. I use 507.00 oil and change it every 10k.

    general question:

so from the point the oil light comes on, how much oil would be required to top up the engine? 1lt? 2lt?

    any responses would be awesome.
