Hey i have a 56 reg passat which has done 30,000 i have had it a couple of months now and it has always made a whistle noise when i sometimes change gear.

Is this normal, as i thought it was until my friend asked about it, he thinks it maybe that the turbo is on its way out???

Could this be so?? even though its hardly done any miles.

    Thanks

That noise is perfectly normal. My 06 Passat makes this noise when changing gear (only notice it when my window is down, and that had a shiny new turbo fitted recently...

FYI turbo was replaced as it had carbon build up due to the previous owner driving the car hard and not letting the turbo cool down.

Typically the turbos are really reliable as long as you allow them several mins of gentle driving at the end of a journey to allow them to cool down proeprly... otherwise the oil in the turbo can bake onto the turbo vanes and cause sticking...which requires a replacement.

I have just had my 06 1.9TDi in for an investigation last week into many things, turbo noise included.

Mine makes a "wooooo" noise when changing gear at about 2000rpm, which if you wind down the window, is accompanied by a "tssshhhh" noise, not unlike the turbo dump noise you sometimes hear on souped up subaru's, only toned down a bit.

I was concerned the turbo hose might be wearing, or a discharge of air was leaking from a gasket or something, as happenned in my last car, to only be superceeded by a complete turbo failure when the hose actually split open.

Man in garage said perfectly fine, many vw diesel engines do this, not to be concerned.

my 2.0tdi 55plate had a turbo noise when changing gear like a dump valve noise. turned out to be the cat converter. fitted a modified cat converter noise gone.

It is probably the air recirculation valve. Perfectly normal.

Exactly the same as my 1.9TDI!

Is like a ghost in the engine going "woooooo".

It did it since I bought the car last year, it was only 9 months old with 13,000 miles on it.

It has done it ever since and I have just ignored it and it seems fine.

i find the wastegate niose is less agressive/loud if you let off the accelerator pedal abit smother, i find if i just let off the pedal with a quick gear change, the dump valve noise is more noticable.

this is the same in the works van too.
