beta/gamma radios

hi there, does anyone know the difference between these two types, why do VW produce these two types? and are the two interchangeable? got problems with my beta radio, rear speakers don't work, but if i use a different head unit( a borrowed kenwood) all speakers worked fine, but i bought a gamma head unit from fleebay, so anyone know what the difference is???????????? cheers

Beta - 2 channel (2 x front speakers)
Gamma - 4 channel (2 x front + 2 x rear)

Gamma has fader control. Other than that, they are essentially the same. If the rear speakers work with another headunit, then either you've got the fader set to the front, or the rear channels on the Gamma are faulty in some way.

when this problem started, there was a loud bang/carckle type sound, then only one speaker worked,( front left) Then after switching off and leaving for about an hour, only the 2 front speakers would work, but at least this other head set should work in the car, if its only the fader control thats different on them, thanx for you reply
