    Hi all,

I have a Golf Mk3 1.6 SE. The car was orignally a 1.4 but has had the engine swapped.

The engine code on the sticker in the boot reads AEX which is the old 1.4 engine.

The engine code on the cambelt cover reads AEE which is a 1.6

However, inorder to change the spark plugs on my engine you have to remove the air cleaner/throttle body air box to gain access. I believe that this only has to be done on engines ABU, ABD and AEA (am I wrong to believe this?).

Any ideas about which engine type you think I have?

    Cheers

    Matt

I'd go with the cam cover sticker and say you have an AEE. Plus I think the AEE is close to the AEX as far as alternatives go, so it would be a reasonable swap.
Where did you get the info about which engines you have to remove the air filter body from? If it was the Haynes manual, it is short of info especially on the AEX.
On my AEX and AEE, to access the spark plugs just unscrew the 4 numbered screws on the air filter body. There is a rubber pipe on the bottom which is part of the crankcase breather system which just pulls off. If you still have it, the warm air pipe from the exhaust manifold to the air inlet also just pulls off. (Or falls off in a lot of cases apparently). The leads and plugs are then accessable.

I got the info about removing the air filter body from a Haynes Manual.

When changing the spark plugs a few weeks ago I had to unscrew the 4 number screws you mentioned so it sounds like I have an AEE engine.

Thanks a lot for your help!

I would think the only definitive answer would be the engine serial number but I think it's on the back of the block and is a pain to read. Might be possible with a small mirror, I really can't remember.
