hi guys im new to all this so please be gentle now alittle about the car its a 1996 audi a4 1.8t showing 160k now up until tuesday the car was running without any faults at all then on the way home at some early hours of the morning it stopped dead so i called a mate who said the fuel pump was not doing its job and seen as where the car broke down may as well been iraq he after several tests managed to wire the fuel pump to the fag lighter to get the car home some 15 miles away now after 10 miles the wire got hot and the car cut out again now in a safer place so the car was left until the morning when i got it towed home and has been left since but the same mate that did the fag lighter get you home fix seems to believe the fuel pump wiring on the car is burnt out seems abit over the top as there has been no smell or smoke to speak of or is he right and is it a common problem any advice would a great help thanks

If the wires were hot as you say, there is a short to earth,in which case the fuse should have blown. You need to remove the supply wire to the pump from the relay and remove the connector on the fuel pump and ohm the wiring, and see if the wire is shortening to earth. There might well be a fault with the fuel pump, and not the wire.

the wires that got hot were the one's straight off the fag lighter to the pump getting a new pump in the morning but still cant understand where the power has gone from the relay as i would imagine if theres no power to the relay the pump has no chance also is there any type of emergency fuel cut off ive not found any thing in the owners handbook to say there is if it ever needs to be reset thanks

If the wires were hot, then that suggests to me that maybe your mate used the wrong gauge wires, as thinner wires will get hot if they have too much current passing through them. I also agree with the suggestion that the pump may be at fault, maybe you could try and wire the pump straight to the battery with a new jump wire, (correct rating/thickness) and see if the pump works?
