I have just bought my first Audi.... 2009 A3 2.0 TDI (140) S line Cab..

I was wondering what year they changed the fuel delivery to common rail, and if anyone has tried both..Is the new engine much of an improvement..??

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Hi Mark

Ive been looking at the new common rail engines which i believe were introuduced during 2008 summer i think but dont quote me on that as part of the revised and facelifted A3 range.

As for the performance and views on the new engine i cant comment as ive not driven the new common rail type. My engine is the 2.0tdi pump duse which can be noisy at start up but is fairly refined and v economical. The new type ive read is very quiet and more efficient.

    Hope that helps

Thankyou for your reply, my wife has a Golf 2.0 TDI PD engine (140 bhp) DSG with a tuning box fitted... The economy is unbeleivable (65mpg on short runs 75mpg motorway). With loads power at low revs.....However it does suffer from black smoke under heavy acceleration.

I was a little disappointred with my CR audi 2.0 tdi DSG even with tuning box it only returns 43mpg average. Seems to have less power than my wifes car.

It only has 2000 miles and hope it improves once the engine is run in.

Common Rail was introduced into A3 during Facelift approx September 2008 All A3 Diesels are now common rail apart from the 1.9TDI which I believe will get replaced at the back end of this year

Common Rail is smoother in my opinion and feels quicker I tried an A6 2.0TDI and I have had a test in the New 2.0TDIe and the new common rail is far better

Better MPG and CO2 for those Company Car drivers out there!!!

I agree with both comments in that the engine iappears from what ive read to be more efficient and more refined.

Ive just had my A3 2.0tdi manual in for its first service today and as a courtesy car was given an 09 reg A3 Cab 2.0 petrol DSG with every extra on you can buy! Nice car but blimey was that engine thirsty...i struggled to get past 33mpg on an hour motorway trip at or around 70mph. Considering you need to service it every year and the cost of the fuel diesel is the way forward for me especially considering the lower emmisions and i believe running costs.

Cant wait to try a new common rail tdi to see the difference and replace mine!

Enjoy and im sure the mpg will improve but having driven many both petrol and diesel A3, A4, A6's with DSG its never as good as audi claim when it comes to fuel economy in reality
