This is how I fit my Clarion stereo in the Golf:

Using my multi tool (pictured) - I pried off the surround:

    As you can see:

    Surround off:

    The empty space:

The back of the stereo - As you can see, there's the Aerial adapter in the back as well as the CAN-BUS adapter:

This is the back of my stereo with the CAN-BUS adapter connected and the relevant connectors all plugged in:

Everything all slotted in but Fascia not on:

Installed photo 1 - Sorry for the poor photo:

Installed photo 2 - Not much better:

I'll post up a better photo tomorrow.

These are all the bits (I) needed:

This is the original thread from my Passat days which shows all the pieces and connectors from when I installed the stereo into my Passat:

    A daytime photo:

The stereo has the added benefit that I can change the text colour to match. The audio improvement is remarkable - the sound that comes from the speakers is far clearer and fuller - and the OEM steering controls work with the stereo too

I want to diy my car as yours, just received mine yesterday. Enjoying the ride!!

    Hi,

    Thanks

And I started at the left hand side - Note, however, that there is a slight chance that you might break off some of the retaining clips.

If you look at the second photo down, you'll notice a gap in the middle between 2 retaining (silver) clips - that was where one of my clips was. It's still held firmly in place with that missing though so don't worry.

It does snap off - don't think it won't, but it's worrying when you have to apply that much force to get it off.

If you look at my photo, it might give you a good idea as to where to apply an appropriate level of force.

Forgot to add that bit - Yes I can - The volume, station changing and mute buttons all work with my Clarion.

The CanBus adapter gives you the options for a Speed pulse (which doesn't work - not that I'm bothered), Reverse signal (if I had a screen and camera) and a connector for OEM steering control:
