Its really very easy. Best advice get the haynes manual which gives a step by step guide.

Although, a good indepenent should charge very little on top of the parts price - a pro would take about half an hour I reckon to do both.

The original VW ones are Bilstein or BOGE/SACHS.
You can get these from Eurocarparts or GSF for about £35 each. http://uat.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Vo...hock-Absorbers
They are so easy to do if you have the tools and jack, as said, it may be worth asking a fast fit place how much it would cost and also ask what make the parts are and if you can supply your own.

Jack up the back end or the back corner and support on axle stands.

    Remove the wheel.

Remove the lower single nut & bolt that holds the strut to the hub.
To remove the bolt, you will need to either position a trolley jack under the hub and lift it up a few mm, as the force the spring will jam the strut down and you can't get the bolt out or put it back in.

Remove the two upper bolts, these are up in the top of the wheelarch through an aluminium casting at the top of the strut.
The strut will now drop out. There are no bolts in the boot like most cars.

Remove any parts off the old damper which you need to transfer to the new one. (bum stop, boot, top mount etc...).
Give them a clean, and clean in the top of the wheel arch so that you don't get dry mud etc.. trapped.

USE Loctite threadlock on all bolts and nuts unless you replace them with new ones which have the threadlock coating already on them!

    Refitting if reversal of removal.

Mark beside the bolts and nuts with paint which will crack if they start to undo.
