has anyone had a problem with the multitronic gearbox on the 2001-2004 audi's. I understand that that it is a known problem to Audi but ive had no joy on my 52 plate with audi customer services. they just tell me to go to the nearest audi main dealer. Apparently there is a modification to the gearbox taking it from the original 6 part clutch to the revised 7 part clutch? any ideas how much it costs and where i can get it done??

    Hi,

my 6 plate clutch Multitronic gearbox was leaking oil. As it was in warranty, they replaced the whole gearbox (quicker and cheaper than to fix oil leak). Fortunately the replacement was the 7 plate version. I did ask at the time whether people were getting gearboxes changed/upgraded, and the dealership had no records of anyone appart from myself with problems resulting in a gearbox change.

I have a 52 plate A4 avant 2.5 tdi multitronic, 50,000 miles only, the gearbox is juddering between gears. I have been advised by a gearbox specialist that the 7th clutch plate & a new ecu will be needed & a total gear box re-build , cost £3250. Now waiting for Audi to give me a Quote !!
Over the phone they have said £1700 for the 7th clutch modification, no other mods nessary. Obviously it appears Audi have sold us a gear box not fit for purpose!! Does any one have a number for a technical specialist at Audi u.k. ?

Hi, I have the same problem on my 04 A4 1.9TDI with multitronic.

I'm getting it fixed this month (new 7 plate clutch I'm told) and will post more with the results. (Reading Audi knew the problem immediately when i took them for a drive...)

In the meantime, multitronic = CVT in north america. If you search on that, you'll find lots of disgruntled folk....

My problem occurred around 25000 miles. However the dealer says most of the problems occur around 40,000 to 60,000 because people miss a special fluid change that occurs between the normal service internals displayed in the car. Strange - i'll ask them for more details and post them here when i get it fixed.

Glad I got it covered under warranty!
    Matt

    Hello,
In the last week of my warranty, I had my 2004 Audi A4 1.9TDI with Multitronic (CVT) fixed.

They replaced the clutch with a 7 plate clutch and it fixed all the shuttering i was having.

Apparently without the extra plates, there isn't enough friction...

I'm told most people with these A4's end up with Multitronic/CVT problems because they miss a special, unknown service interval to change the transmission fluid (or something to do with the transmission). The car doesn't remind you, unlike normal servicing. Be sure to ask your dealer about it... (i think they said 40k miles? can anyone clarify that?)

Anyway, it would have cost me £1000 (GBP) from what I can gather, so I'm quite glad it was done under warranty!!

Now that it drives correctly, hopefully i can get it Revo chipped

this is true 40,000k for fluid change and the dealer does not remind you as i found out through a long hard battle with audi uk and the garage i purchased it from, the box would of cost you alot more than a grand if not under warranty, they have put a new box in mine still having some teething troubles with it,the total cost of my box including trying to fix it first, cost 6k luckily the garage forked this lot out i purchased it from after trying to get a gearbox speacialist to repair it first and failed.

got two years warranty now and once sorted my a4 tdi sport avant will be up for sale as i have ordered a rs4

you are totaly right franklin. audi has been cheating us (audi fans) for a long time and they have to compensate us for that. i suggest that you (and all others with the same problems) wright a personal letter to the ceo mr.r.stadler or chairman mr.m.winterkrn at audi, in ingolstad, instead of searching for a place to fix your gear box. they have knowingly sold defect gear boxes for years and they do not deserv any polite treatment.

The multitronic gearbox is a problem, as you will have picked up from the threads. My car is 2004 and had a new box fitted in december 07. I had judders, lurching forward, no selection of gears and power loss. Judders came first with slow gear selection.
Audi are not admitting a problem but could, depending on milage of the vehicle and whether the gear box oil was changed at 40k contribute a % to repair.

From what I've read there are a varity of issues / fix's, ECU, Valve body, 7 plate clutch conversion. Whilst one or a combination of these may fix it it can be more expensive than a new gearbox, the only sure way of solving the problem and getting a 24 mth warranty on the new box. Either way its a costly repair. I had to take mine to the main dealer who liaised with Audi UK & German

    Hope this helps

like i mentioned in my earlier mails i had the same problems and my car has been "patched" now already twice! in the garage they finally told me that they have a lot of problems....but that this is not a mistake, no this is only a "characteristic" of that paricular gear box. the fact that it does not last is none of their concern. i have been told that they are not going to do anything about it and expect that their customers pay at least 50% of the costs!?
if we, dissapointed audi owners that either had to make repairs on our own costs and those that are still waiting for a "reply" from audi would all write a letter&demand for compensation to the ceo mr.r.stadler and chairman mr.m.winterkorn at audi ag in ingolstad they would slowly have to do something about it. as long as you (i have already send my demands) only chat on this forum and hope that somebody sympatises with you nothing will happen...audi has knowingly sold cars with defect gear boxes and cheated, humiliated and insulted their customers for years. imagine, audi sold in average over 150000 a4&a6 models over the years...partly with manual gears and partly with this crap multitronic gear system!
