    Hello,
I'm currently in the market for a Touran. I think we have decided on a 2.0 TDi either SE or Sport.
I cannot decide what gearbox would be best though. Ive driven both and really liked the smooth fast changes the DSG gives you, But because i will be looking for an 04-06,and i plan to keep it for a while, I am worried that the DSG is gonna break and cost me a fortune
I have read some things on audi tt forums about electronics issues and £5000 replacement bills. am i better to play it safe and get a manual?

The rest of the car is equally as complex as the DSG box, with some black boxes or components costing thousands of pounds to replace e.g. ABS unit, turbo etc. Buying DSG vs manual is probably more a personal choice of driving style, although I will say the manual 6 speed involves a huge amount of gear changing compared to older cars.

Nowaday's cars require an inspection (i.e. AA or RAC), at least six months warranty and also buying your own mechanical insurance when that expires. The days of looking over the car yourself and having confidence in the purchase dissappeared about the same time that TV repairmen did.

The best buying advice, other than the above, is to make sure absolutely everything on the car works as intended. Most warranties/insurance will exclude smaller items and these can still be expensive, so testing cruise, windows, heaters etc will allow to either negotiate or walk away.
