    Hi all,
Im considering buying a 2005 1.9Tid 115PS 57k A4 Saloon from a friend. Car looks great but im concerned its only 115 BHP for such a large car and also Parkers suggested this engine model is 'frugal', hence my concern.

Does anyone have any experience of remapping this engine size/model, the performance improvement achieved and if its really beneficial in overall performance and makes a noticeable difference ?

One garage I asked offer a money back guarantee on the basis that on some larger cars the difference is just not noticeable. They advised it would take it to 150 bhp/250 torque.

Until now Ive been considering a Honda Accord 2.2CDTI 140 BHP which although is a good alround car I still struggle to find it aesthetically pleasing !

    Any advice much appreciated.

    Chz
    Darren.

    Hi,

I must agree with you, 115bhp is almost too little power for such a heavy car.

Remapping a relatively low powered 4cyl engine that is working quite hard anyway (to lug the heavey A4 around) is not the best idea in my opinion; it will significantly shorten the engine's life (or at least some of its components).

A remap would put the engine under a lot of stress, so I wouldn't reccomend it (not for an A4 anyhow, perhaps in an A3).

The way I see it, your choice is clear:

    1. Buy the car from your friend at such a good price that it makes the 115bhp worth living with (I've had 115bhp in a Mk.4 Golf and I couldn't live with it!)

    2. Ignore the fact that your friend has that car for sale and wait for a 140BHP TDI to come into your price range.

    Hope thats helpful.
    Al.

PS: If you only plan to keep the car for a 1-2 years.. any engine trouble will probably be the next owners problem

Ahh the 115ps 1.9TDI, I had the engine in an Avant and it is fine if you are doing mainly motorway journeys and is only a fraction slower than the 140ps 2.0TDI on 0-60

Frugal is the word- very impressive fuel consumption even at 80+mph everywhere, won't set the world on fire on acceleration but is meant to be more reliable than the 2.0TDI.

So depends how you like to drive really- but remember the 1.6 was also available in the A4, how many of them do you see on the roads lol

Thanks for your feedback kodkod & Toff. Some interesting and encouraging points you both make. I wasnt sure if Audi had offered the same 1.9 TDI in bhp greater than 115 (thinking if they did then the remap may have no wear issues ie if Audi used common engine components), but from what I can gather the next greater bhp is the 2.0 Tdi that you mention.
Its a car for my wife to mainly cruise the M3 and she is less concerned about the power than me (the cream leather interior has swung it for her and it will be a vast improvement on our 90 bhp Scenic!!). Cheers for now...
