Golf TDI electric wing mirror problems...

Hi all,

I just bought my first vw golf (1999, 1.9 TDI s ) the other day, and about two hours after getting it home the drivers side wing mirror stopped functioning properly.

The problem is that when the electric mirror positioning knob is on the right or left position it only moves the passenger mirror. However, when its on the right position all the movements are in reverse. I guess this is some form of wiring malfunction, but wondered if anyone had a similar problem, or would know the best way to resolve the issue.

I'm not sure if its the motor, or not, but just in case I'm bidding and winning a second hand one on ebay.

Mine [2001 Passat] moves both mirrors in unison when the right control is selected, the left works as expected. All the related wires and control modules are clean and dry and I have since fitted a new switch with no improvement.

As I can still adjust both by doing them in the right order, I haven't dug too much deeper, but it is strange behaviour.

i read of a similar problem a few weeks ago... this isnt actually a problem, its intended to be that way... ok, here goes...

when you adjust the drivers side mirror (R selected) both mirrors adjust in unison, this is for driver convenience, so that both mirrors are matched in their position.

if you wish to adjust your passenger then, just select (L) and adjust it.

ie. adjust your drivers side mirror, then your passenger side mirror.

theres nothing wrong with either of your wirings

Yep, well put eshrules. I was baffled by this dilemma when I had my previous Golf Mk4 1.6 SE. The driver-side wing mirror was smashed by an idiot whilst I had the car parked overnight (I didn't fold the mirror in). After finding just the mirror replacement, I was upset with both moving at the same time, and didn't bother looking into this "electrical" problem. I sold the car anyway after developing other faults with it.

In my current VW Golf Mk4 GT TDi, I noticed the same happens (both mirrors move when R being adjusted. I took it to the main dealers where I bought it from as it was still under warranty, and they said its normal for the R to move the L aswell, but the L shouldn't move the R. It's standard and not faulty. They said its a common confusion amongst owners.

I probably the right person to diagnose your problem, but have you checked the fuses? Worth a shot. If you can find a cheap motor, worth replacing then. eBay's a good option... if its an auction, bid on the LAST few seconds. Loadsa sellers are bidding their own items up (shill bidding), so take a punt on it, in the last few seconds.

If the mirror's not a major issue, you could just try set it yourself manually, rather than the posh method of doing it electronically... save a few bucks that way!

agree with the above, be careful with ebay, shill bidding becoming more common...

the other alternative is to get a complete mirror unit (ensure its an elec one) off a scrappy and just pinch the motor out of that... the only thing that varies on the mirror on the mk4 golf is the connections for the heating, i think elec adjustment is fitted as standard to most golfs.
