Hi all i am new to this forum.

currently own a peugeot 306 td i am 17 , passed my driving test in november 08 , i am 18 this august

i am looking at getting a mk 5 golf but havent really got a clue what engines they do.

Got a ruff idea that there are 2 Versions

    The 2.0 GT TDI

    and 1.9 TDI , 140bhp and 170 bhp ?

could somebody just clarify what models they do ? i think it is 1.9 tdi but not sure

if so i will be looking at a 1.9tdi 140 due to insurance reasons ,

anybody shed any light on insurance groups or send me a link to a 1.9 tdi for sale so i can use the registration to get an insurance quote ?

    thanks in advance
    Jamie

    Hi Jamie,

    There are 3 TDIs

    1.9 is 105 bhp

    2.0 is either 140 or 170 bhp..

Jamie, I would shop around for a better quote. The 1.9 is only insurance group 6 whereas the 2.0 is in group 13. I have the 1.9 and it drives really well with plenty of poke. As well as cheaper insurance it will be cheaper to buy and should get better mpg. Run it for a few years, build up some no claims and then buy a 2.0 GTI FSI.

Not sure exactly what the stats are for the 1.9 vrs the 2.0.

If you take a look on the Autotrader website at some used examples some of them give technical data which tells you performance figures, insurance groups, tax bands etc.

Remeber that performance figures only tell part of the story. It's what they are like on the road in real driving that counts. For example I also have a 1.6 petrol focus which on paper has a quicker 0-60 time than the diesel Golf. Boy was I surprised to find out how much faster the Golf feels! It has the power right where you need it. But then if you already drive a diesel you know this anyway.

My guess is that the 2.0 will be quite a bit faster. It has an extra 35bhp, more torque and 6 gears to play with. But then you did mention that you can't get insured for one of those!

If you are looking for a compromise between performance and insurance/price why not check out the Seat Ibiza and Skoda Fabia VRS with the 130bhp 1.9?

The Seat 1.9FR is quite a cool choice for a 17 year old and should be cheaper than a Golf 2.0.
