    Hi

I'm looking to have a go at changing the cambelt on my mk3 Golf 1.9 td 94 plate (m reg ) AAZ engine code. Are there any problems I should be aware about,or any special tools I may need to do the job ?
Does anyone have any links to other websites with instructive photo's or maybe their own pics on how to do the job step by step ?
Iv'e got the 'Haynes Manual' but it seems a bit vague..
What sort of mileage do mk3's need there cambelt changed ?
Thanks for reading & I look forward to your replies.....

You need a cam locking plate and a pump locking pin. With how prone the AAZ is to loosening the front crank pulley bolt, I always take the toothed belt pulley off and fit a new bolt BUT as fitting a new bolt requires a special crank locking tool, I suggest you don’t touch it. The pump should also have its injection timing checked but a special dial gauge and adapter to go through the back of the pump are required. The belt should be changed every four years or 40K miles.

I recently had a quote to do mine of around £200 which included a new water pump. This was from an independent and consisted of 2 hours labour plus parts.

No problems with the car at all, just that the last belt was done over 60k miles and 8 years ago, which is pushing the limits of these belts!

Not got round to it yet, just ordered the cam locking plate + fuel pump locking pin off ebay for £15.
A good belt kit + new tensioner is about £30-£40 max from GSF again depends on the quality etc,its worth spending that bit more for quality parts. The last time I had the belt done I was advised to get a new water pump fitted at the same time, again thats been mentioned above. The price of those is about the same as the kit if I remember rightly, could be cheaper depends on the quality you want really.I bought all the bits needed + the garage charged me £75 to fit everything which I was quite happy with that. Also I had the same work done on another golf td I had + the diesel pump was changed at the same time also ,mobile mechanic fitted everything on my drive for £90 ! So really the price can vary with who you get to do the job, I think you could get everything done (belt kit + water pump + installation) for a lot less than £200,just depends on where you live + if you know any decent mechanics who won't rip you off.

No Golf 3 TDI requires a water pump change with the cam belt!

its advisory because when the new cam belt is fitted it will put the old waterpump under alot more pressure and it could fail. then ur gonna get another big bill to strip the car back to get to the water pump again so its really a false economy not to get it fitted will probably save u a load of time and money in the long run
