Now i may be lucky enough to get hold of a wrecked golf that has a MFSW and the Highline clocks.

Would it be a lot of work to get the things working in my car, which obviously does not have mfsw and the highline speedo?

I can get at whatever modules needed to run the steering wheel or the clocks.

What do people think who have done this before, or have a bit more knowledge on this than i do?!

    Thanks in advance.

Lots of guys have done this on the Golf v forums, you will need Vag Com and the controll moduals plus the looms. Get the Elsawin prog of Ebay and you will have all the Info required.
You tube also has vids. of the dash replacement

Do a search for MFSW here http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/ and you will find loads of threads with information. There is a very long one, complete with all the details, photos, pitfalls and problems, so root around a bit until you find it.

The MFSW swap is reasonably straightforward and you shouldn't have much a problem switching bits from a scrapper. Beware though, there can be problems with cruise control failing to work properly (if you have it), unless you have the correct modules in the steering column. It's a good idea to use a MFSW that matches your gearbox. Obviously, the flappy paddle version is going to look a bit sad and might be a problem to incorporate on a manual so make sure you go like for like. You don't have to go flappy paddle if you have a DSG, but even the basic MFSW has room for the paddles if you can find the parts elsewhere.

Highline clocks may be more of a problem, since there are some variations in the gubbins from model to model and year to year. Your best chance of success is parts from a similar age car to your own. Proceed with caution and make sure you have all the info to hand before you start.

Thank you for all of the information. I will have a look onto the other forums for help!

I have got cruise control (argh) so that may prove to be a problem. The wrecked car was a manual Golf Match 1.9 TDi, and i think the age was around 2005. I have a manual GT TDi on a 57 plate, so will not need the flappy paddles, and wont get them on this steering wheel!

Thanks again for your help, and i hope that this works as well it possible can! I am definately going to do a lot more research, and i have time as the wrecked car is not cleared through insurance yet, so it cannot be touched.

If yours is stalk controll. and the wrecker is MFSW button controll then it could be awkward/difficult, but if it has not been fitted to the wrecker then you should be fine.

My cruise control is stalk control, but im not sure if the wrecked one had crusie control. It definately didn't have a stalk, but i wouldnt know if it had cruise from just looking at the wheel would i?

Sorry if im getting confused here, but if i take a control module from a car without cruise control, but a mfsw and put it in mine, will that mean that i will have a mfsw but no cruise, or can it be programmed to do both, or do i need a separete module?!

There is lots of information on UK Mkivs about this, but it seems everycar that has been upgraded is different, and im not sure where i fit in!

    Thanks,

    Matthew

Cruise control does not need a seperate controll modual, and the stalk controll just needs coded in after fitting with VagCom (see the kits on Ebay for info)
If the other car had it on the MFSW the buttons are easily identifiable, ie. Resume , Cancell , set.
If it is a fairly new golf with highline MFD then it will have : -
on the left 4 buttons, Vol +, Vol-, mute, and phone.
on the right it will have 4 buttons with:- Menu, OK, and Up button and Down button.
If it had cruise control then it would be on the left hand stalk.

Yes, sorry if I have introduced any confusion. ALL Mk5 Golf cruise controls are on the indicator stalk so no change with MFSW, but there are a number of different steering wheel control modules and cruise can get confused.

As for the clocks, the 2007 Mid-line and High-Line displays used different controls (switches on the right hand stalk for mid-line, usually buttons on the wheel for high-line) and you may have some set-up problems if not going like-for-like. I know that people hanker after the high-line display, but I've got one of each and apart from it telling me what is on the radio/CD I can't see any benefit of all the messing about. My advice, especially if you are using a 2005 donor would be to just do the MFSW and save youself the hassle of the clocks.
