I've been told that I need a new ABS Control Unit & pump for my 2002 VW 1.9 Golf GT TDI 130 BHP. I've been quoted over a grand for a new one, so I'm looking at getting a 2nd hand one.

The only thing is, I'm being told that it's not possible to fit a 2nd hand or reconditioned ABS Control Unit as there are "coding issues". Does anyone know if this is true? If not, is there anything else that I need to take into account?

    Thanks a lot.

you may be lucky to get one with same code
you will need diag machine to code/reset memory but they are reletively easy to fit if you have a pressure bleeder

yes, i've just replaced mine on my mk4 1.8t, all i needed to do was clear the fault code once the pump was fitted. My pump was a reconditioned one and i've had no problems, as long as it's same part numbers as your old one you should be ok. Try www.autotekelectronics.co.uk this is were i got mine which cost me a total of £100 with posatge which was a far cry from some of the prices i was qouted. Hope this helps good luck. Oh and make sure you've checked all the connections and fuses first, there's 3 on top of the battery that are common for going, could save you money..

Reminds me of mine..1st you MUST get a vag fault code check done, and let us know the results,...but the easiest and cheapest check you can do is the 3 green fuses on top of the battery under the little black plastic flap, they control the ABS module, they tend to corrode limiting the power the module receives giving you a 'rogue' abs fault, do it with the ignition off, replace them, then drive approx 100 yards, at least 20mph, see if its cured
