    HI,

I am new to the forum, but I can relate.

Remember that the MPG fiugres quotes are to be taken with pinch of salt. They do not include passengers, luggage or windy conditions.

To start with I would test the cinsumption after your next service, with no one in except yourself. Stick to about 60 mph. You should hit 60 mpg in that particular one.

A mate of mine had one and he averaged 62-65mpg. Does it have the same tyres on as the factory sold it with?

If this is all done and your mpg is still that low (for this car!) I would raise the issue with VW. I must say though - if you do a lot of motorway get a 1.9 tdi....

    Cheers
    Ivor

I'd agree with ijross, manufacturers are to be taken with large pinch of salt. There are so many things that effect mpg, weather conditions, driving style, is the car well maintained, tyre pressures, even driving with the windows open has a significant effect.

I run the 1.9 Tdi and routinely see around 48 around town and that improves to 50+ during the summer. Recently had a leisurely run of 120ish miles mainly dual carriageway and kept to around 60- 65ish and hit 72.8mpg. On the return journey saw 67 at a normal pace.

Again I'm with ijross on the motorway driving, 1.9 is the much happier of the two. At 2000rpm it's doing motorway speed and not even trying.

You'll see the difference after you have covered 10,000 miles from new. MPG should average between 50 to 55mpg, that's the good news the bad news will be the front tyres will begin to wear badly, Polos are notorious for this. I then changed to a 1.9TDi Golf, and surprisingly averaging 60mpg without suffering heavy front tyre wear.

It would be worth mentioning to them but be warned they may use 'winter' as an excuse for the low mpg. My Polo was a 1.4TDi 75bhp Dune, I was averaging below 50mpg for a combination of town/motorway driving but it did improve after 10,000 miles. Other factors that affect mpg is air con being left on or low tyre pressures.

    Hi,

Yes, I would report it and rent or loan a 1.9tdi as a test.

They have no reason to complain as it is under warranty.

I would give it time and let the engine run in properly.Depending on driving style i've heard it can take in excess of 25k to run a tdi in fully.I have a 100 mile commute mostly on motorways and when sticking to 60mph regularly achieve 65+ mpg.The only time i ever reach 70+ mpg is when sat behind a HGV doing 56mph.
IMO when sat on the motorway doing 70+ mph one might as well be driving a 1.9 TDI from an economy point of view.If you can live with travelling at 60mph then i'd go for the 1.4 TDI.
Mine has now done 170k so is well and truly run in.
