Hi, im new to the forum and audi ownership and would like to ask for some advice on the 1.9tdie model. Test drove one today at warrington audi and was pleasantly surprised at the performance, especially the mid range torque. Im coming from a clio 197 due to my wife being pregnant and needing more doors, better mpg and overall comfort. The clio is a nice car, rapid in a straight line and handles amazingly. However due to me becoming a father in may we need to find a more sensible and suitable car for our needs. I was quoted 340 pcm for a brand new car which is roughly wot were paying for the clio over 4 years. Unfortunatly having just paid for a big wedding we dont have much money for a big deposit so that quote is based on a 1300 pound deposit , is that a good price? Also wot problems if any have people experienced with this model.

    Cheers Danny

It wont be doing a lot of miles at first but my wife commutes to work and needs to travel to her other offices in basingstoke and bracknell so it will be doing a fair few miles when she eventually goes back to work. I was also thinking about the new 1.4 tsi but the dealer didnt have one to test drive. This might be more to my tastes as im not a massive fan of diesels the move is mainly increased economy but the 1.4 is supposed to be frugal

1.9TDIe is a good car if you do the mileage. 1.4TFSI I bet is just as good.

I know a few people on the Forum could comment on that engine. I cannot as I have not driven it.

Personally I would go for the Petrol if you can.

As I read it, you can get good economy from the FSI engines, but you have to drive them frugally to get the frugal economy. The diesel on the other hand just needs to be driven normally and you get the economy.

We have had a 1.4 TFSI for about 2 months now and overall are extremely pleased with it. It only has 1500 miles on the clock and the weather has been extremely cold, as we all know, so on short runs the engine has taken a while to heat up which has an adverse effect on economy. We have been running it on branded ( i.e. non-supermarket) regular fuels.
Overall economy has been about 35 mpg which is respectable but not great. However when we make the effort (i.e. changing to the gear suggested by the Driver Info System) we have seen 40 mpg + quite easily. A recent 350 mile round trip at highish M-way speeds realised an average of 39.5 mpg so we have yet to see anything near the official combined figure of 47 for this model. (I am easily able to achieve the combined figure in my other car , a year old BMW 330D)
Torque is very good for a petrol engine and really kicks in around 2000 rpm so the engine is almost 'diesel like' in its performance
However the best point is its' refinement - at idle you just cannot hear the engine and under way the relatively muted tyre and wind noise drown out any engine noise which cannot be said about the 1.9 TDI I am sure.
In summary if economy is your ultimate target and you can live with the engine noise go for the diesel. If however lower, but good, petrol economy is acceptable with superb refinement go for that. The deciding factor for us was also that the petrol car was £1700 cheaper than the equivalent diesel - so no contest in the end, if buying again we would go for the same engine.
