reason being my service is due and with my low mileage (less than 8K annual) i will be reverting to fixed interval from the variable.

I still have 6ltr of the castrol edge longlife oil which i want to continue using - expensive stuff i know !

As far as im aware this is fine to still use

I would have thought so because it is specifically made for VW/Audi engines and I believe the manual proposes the use of other oils as ok as long as it has the right qualities - which it has

Hope this helps and happy new year

Nothing wrong in using this if you have it, but if you are going to used a fixed service interval from now on you may as well use another oil that is just as good but not so expensive, like a different Castrol oil or one from mobil maybe. Just as long as it is the same specifications as stated in your service manual for fixed servicing you will be OK, and quids in!

The main difference between the long life oil and the normal oil, is that long life is that it is a full synthetic as it needs to retain is viscosity and lubrication properties for a lot longer.

It's a bit of overkill to use it for normal service distances, but will not do any harm to your engine at all.

Personnally long life servicing is the worst possible thing to do to an engine, as though the oil retains it's properties the contaminates do not get removed

Its no problem to use better oil at all, i use full synth in my 1.8t and service her on around 6k intervals to prevent sludging problems from
