I have 2 x T5's and both of them have the fan stuck on when the ignition is on and when ticking over.

I have replaced the fan switches on both vans and have been told it could be the outside temperature swith.

Any ideas anybody??? Thanks - Mat

Hi Moose Man. Both T5's are the 1.9 104bhp engines. One has air con and the other is standard. No warning lights and no access to fault reading either. I hope this helps you to help me.

    Many thanks - Mat

    Hello.
    Just a few basic things.
The vehicle with AC, if you switch the AC off do the fans stop?, they might take a few seconds to cut out.
You might save a lot of time if you can find someone with some diagnostic equipment. The fans are sometimes switched on by the ECU if there is an engine fault. The engine management light is not always illuminated. This is why you need to check for fault codes. Just changing parts by guess work usually ends up very expensive!!!!! Or there could just be a fault on the fan control circuit/modul. You could run some checks on this as well depending on what diagnostic kit you or someone can get access to.

Try the relay, I don't know where it is, but its most likely there somewhere. It might be in the centre console.

If you disconnect the fan switch, do the fans stop?

Hi Paul, I have disconnected the fan switch located at the bottom of the radiator but the fan still kicks in permanently. I will try and get access to a diagnostics machine but I will check the relay first. Many thanks will keep you posted.

Okey doke, it definitely sounds like the relay to me.

    Hi there,
Just signed up looking for a solution to the very same problem myself.
My fan comes on 95% of the time but it occasionly goes off.
Mechanic told me to take off the small silver box to the left of the fan, apparently in the caddy these get wet and can cause this problem, but dont know how this affects the transporter cos they have the belly pan to prevent them getting wet.
Took the box off this morning but it looks perfectly dry.
Also the main V.W garage said the same thing.
I have the 1.9 T5 as well. Its the 85 bhp I think.
The mechanic used the diagnostic piece of kit and everything seemed ok.
Totally confused as to what it could be.
    Any help truly appreciated.
    Bren.

In that case, provided VW are correct, then it will be the module. That's one very expensive bill for something that is, effectively, a relay.
