    Hi, just joined the site and would really welcome any advice. Bought an 07 Audi A4 Avant tdi 170 2 months ago and very pleased with car but poor fuel consumption.
    Getting 34-35mpg on mixed motorways and general driving. Figs say 49mpg average. Drive very steadily (75mph motorways, no heavy right foot in towns) and really disappointed. Tried the fuel additive, and Audi Bristol saying 'nothing showing up on computer'. Was expecting 43-46 mpg and both really disappointed and at a bit of a loss what to do next. Any help or advice valued. Thanks

    Hi Toneman,

    Firstly welcome to the forum.

    Secondly, in future you are far more likely to receive a better response if you post issues in the correct model section of the forum;
    VWAUDI Forum > Model Specific Sections > Audi . A4 - S4 - RS4

    There seems to be quite a consensus on 170 TDIs suffering from disappointing fuel consumption.
    2.0 TDI 170 Fuel Consumption

    Points to note:
    • Economy seems to improve with increased mileage (i.e. as the engine is run in)
    • 170 BHP is normally a conservative power specification, with a few members reporting 182 BHP unmodified.
    • An ECU update reportedly improves economy
    • (However) your economy figures are comparively good

    From what I can gather, compared to the previous generation 8 valve 130 BHP PD engine, the 16 valve 170 BHP;

    • is noticeably less economical
    • has reduced lower rev power delivery (personally I feel this makes the 170 comparatively less driveable)

    The latter is likely due to turbo spooling resultant from the 170's larger turbo.

    I would be very interested in knowing forum members real life Town/MWay economy figures against the following engines;

    • 90 BHP VE TDI
    • 110 BHP VE TDI
    • 130 BHP PD TDI
    • 140 BHP PD TDI
    • 170 BHP PD TDI

    Regards,
    TR7

    PD130 - 46mpg combined. 50/50 mix town and motorway. Sometimes more, I've had up to 49 combined before.

    hi. I've just bouight a 56 plate A4 2.0 TDI 170 Avant and am also disappointed in the economy. It's been checked by Audi, who say that there are no problems with it but it averages only 37-40 mpg combined and as for the brochures 61mpg on a run, I'm afraid this is pure fiction. A helpful Audi employee told me that all the 170's he's driven are the same and the brochure mpg is extremely unlikely. Careful combined driving has returned 43 mpg recently but this is comparable to my previous car, a Golf GTi 1.8T. I've accepted the economy now and with the exception of this am most pleased with the car and it's power. I'd never take Audi's word for mpg in future though. Hope this helps, MG

    Normally, the Manufacturers mpg figures are obtained by carrying out a specific (& complicated) drive cycle on a few million pound's worth of rolling road. (I work for one!)

    I have an 05 170 2litre tdi and am getting just under 40mpg motorway and around town (worked out from fill to fill) take no notice of the b****x on the computer. I think it's great compared to my impreza; 16-19mpg.

    I recently sold my VW Touran with the 2.0 TDI 140 engine with the DSG box, admittedly I'd had it remapped and used Millers additive.

    On a 220 mile run recently with the Ran fully laden - 2 passengers plus car loaded up to the roof in the boot and top of headrests in the back I achieved 52 mpg!

    I regularly got 50 to the gallon on motorway runs and averaged top 40s including urban crawls.

    My son has recently changed to an Octy vRS with the 170 engine and he's reporting same sort of mpgs as quoted in the previous members' threads. Not good news - I previously thought the figures that VAG gave out were fairly realistic.

    I have an A4 170 saloon and it returns 42 - 45 mpg average if I drive it without putting my foot down too much. This is combined urban and motorway. The milage is 32,000.

    Hope this helps .
