It ain't going to be cheap with anyone because of your age. Have you tried www.moneysupermarket .com? Brilliant comparison site.

    I'm 19 and to insure a 1996 1.4 polo costs me £800.

It's worth trying a few VW specialists like the forum insurers but I still think it'll be quite expensive on a 180bhp GTi.

You must have money to burn to be paying £2350 on car insurance, I'd hang on with the car you've got until you get some NCB under your belt.

Nope, there isn't. I agree with the below quote and you'll maybe realise that you can't get "cheap" insurance for a performance car:

It will be at least £2,000 at your age. I will also bet my shirt and tie that you won't have everything required for sufficient legal cover. Don't find it out the hard way either... Check everything throroughly before you buy it. Don't be too keen because they're cheap. A company may look like they're saving you hundreds of ££'s but in reality the first accident you are involved in, your fault or otherwise, you may get stung and they'll cost you a fortune.

At 18 I would think that would be 3rd Party as well. Not a good idea when you have a performance car. Also, don't mod it. At all. You'll basically void the insurance at your age.

I'm 21, 3 years NCB (almost 4 but I switched insurance company for my S3! Lost half a year's NCB! ) I have a clean license (although think I got caught recently. ) and it costs me around £1,200 for the S3 225 BHP unmodified. I thankfully have everything on this insurance. Try Bell Direct. They're good. Gives you business cover too which is the reason I saved well over £2,000 on my quotes.

I'd also agree with this. I can afford the insurance but it leaves me with little money for repairs, which the S3 needs at the moment. Things like a Xenon headlight unit can cost over £550 PER HEADLIGHT minimum if you get it done at a main dealer for their guarantee. Not cheap... Something to bear in mind should anything go wrong. Especially on an older car if you don't have the proper know-how.

Save your money for now and buy a 1.6 A3 or Golf. It will save you a lot of money for the time being and the insurance will still be expensive. Try Bell Direct as I said.

Also, remember the running costs of a performance car. I'm over £250 per month. My car likes 98 RON and has developed an addiction to BP Ultimate over V-Power, 2p difference between the brands at the moment but you notice it. Still 98 RON is more expensive by at least 8ppl at the moment where I am.

sorry to say it, but I'd be going for a cheaper/lower performance model. I'm 24 with a few years NCB and I still can't get cheap insurance on a Gti...

as a rough example for you to consider, a Golf mk3 1.8 Gti would cost me in the region of £2k to insure, drop the Gti badge, go over to a seat Toledo with the 1.8 20V engine (developing more bhp than the Gti) and I can easily half that insurance cost. It's all to do with many factors, including the class of car, the area you live in, the sex of the policy holder and, of course, age.

If you want something a bit nippy, but with cheap insurance, try looking at a small engined polo, or perhaps an Ibiza. They're both lightweight so don't need a terribly big engine to get them going.

I'm currently in a 94 polo, with a 1.0 engine pushing 34 bhp and I have to say, it's neither slow nor boring, weighing only 700kg .... food for thought perhaps
