I have a T reg 1.8T APU and I need to replace the thermostat. One of the two nuts is accessible directly, but the other, I can't get a socket on it, there is a metal bar running from the front of the car to some part of the gearbox or oil sump. I can photo it if required. Should I remove that bar to proceed or socket the left nut off and then try to spanner off the right one? I think that the right nut is going to be very awkward if the bar stays put. I have no idea what that bar does, but presumably it is under tension of some sort so my concern is that I won't be able to put it back in place if I remove it.

Does anyone know what I mean?

    thx

    Chris

    Chris

The bar you refer to is a tie bar to support some of the weight of the ancilaries. Undo one bolt and slacken the other off and just move the bar out of the way. You can then undo the thermostat housing and replace the thermostat. Remember to refit the bar.

    Simple job no worries.

Are the thermostats on other engines located here too? This looks like my TDI 110 AFN engine from underneath. On previous cars, I have replaced the thermostat as a matter of course and to prevent overheating problems, but the passat always sits bang on 90 degrees, not a millimetre over or under, even when in heavy traffic or on hot days so I've never thought about changing it. I'd happily replace it if I thought it needed doing, although due to its location, I'd rather not, unless it coincides with an oil change!

I have often sat and watched the coolant temp displayed on the lap top screen, in Measuring Blocks 08, as seen by the instrument pod. When the Measuring block says 74°c, the gauge says 90°c and on a few occasions when there has been a cooling system fault, I have seen the Measuring Block showing 117°c and the gauge still says 90°c. I have never been brave enough to let one overheat to the point of the gauge showing over 90°c, I bottled it at 117°c!
