Hi I have a Sharan 2005 1.9TDI 130 and I'm sick of the Aux heater being on nearly all the time, I've been trying to find the relay to disconnect it and stop it comming on at all.

Anyone know where it might be?

    Thanks.

Hi I've noticed your VERY informed as I've read a lot of your posts and replies, my idea is just to stop it either working altogether or to stop it working for so long, the dam thing comes on sometimes at about 8c according the the temp sensor in the dashboard and runs for ages, it's really knocking my fuel economy.
Would removeing the fuse also stop the fuel going into it? Is there a way to make it come on say closer to 1 or 2c and go off when the car has done 3 miles or so?

Absolutely any info you have on this subject.

    MAny thanks.

Hi Removing the fuse will stop it working,it is the main fuse to the auxillary heater control unit. The heaters are, i would say,an necessity on TDIs,on a cold day the engine will have a hard job reaching 70 degrees. We have fitted an extra switch to quite a few vehicles, which gives you full control over the heater. This was mostly intended for vehicles travelling short journeys, when the heater did not reach proper operating temeratures, which caused the unit to cokes up.Then when you really needed the heater it would not start.

    Thank you,

A couple more bits for me to add to hopefully come to the best solution.

I do mainly supermarket runs and as you say it will coke up, my old one did and I was soooooo pleased, but I've always been concerned about the temps not getting up.

We never use it with rear passengers in fact the seats are always out, so any rear heating is never used.
Am I right thinking that the engine thermostat doesn't open until it's reached it's optimum temp? If so I wouldn't be risking wearing the engine out would I?

So long as I'm not wrecking the engine I would be happy to do it.

Thanks again, I really do appreciate it.

If it is cold enough the engine will never reach 90 degrees, without the help of the auxillary heater.I would not go as far as saying you will wreck the engine by driving it at 70 degrees.Although the fuel consumption will be higher at a temp of 70 than it will be at a temp of 90,and the engine will wear more, the colder it runs. What your auxillary heater uses in fuel might be compensated,on what your engine saves running at the correct temerature.

I see so the switch idea you've done looks good, where did you take the wires from to connect it?
Finally do you think thre might be a chance of being able to reprogramme the temps at which it comes on and what temp it goes off at using Ross comm?

Sorry for the endless questions it's something that's been on my mind for the 9 years I've owned Sharan's I have never found out anywhere to find information about them.

You can not adjust starting and stopping temperatures.there is an ambient temperature switch in the plenum chamber, there are two wires connected to it.Break the black wire and join two wires run them to the interior were you can position a switch, you have now full control of the heater
