Hi Guys wondered what pressure i should be putting in my 2.0 TDI SE saloon Passat. At the moment i am putting in 36PSI rear and 38PSI in the front.

What are you guys putting in yours i think the 2.0litre has different tyre pressures than the 1.9litre car?

Secondly also noticed that it is unsettled on the motorway as if my wheels aren't balanced can't feel it through the steering wheel just through the car its self. I have had them balanced and they are new tyres any once else notice this about this car its around 62MPH seems unsettled.

    Many Thanks

Wheel size? I have 17" Standard alloys and for light loads (Max two people) it is 30psi all around, is your tyre pressure chart not in the fuel flap?

2.0TDI Sport Estate (standard rims) is shown as 2.6bar (37.7psi) front, 2.8 bar (40.6psi) rear.

Fully laden, 3 bar all round (43.5psi).

Don`t know if the smaller wheel/tyre combination of the SE is any different though.

I have a 55 plate standard 2.0 SE Tdi (not sport suspension) but with 17" Le Mans alloys. I have mine at 2.6bar (38psi) all round. Always thought that was high but the car likes it.

Regarding your comment on feeling "unsettled":

Mine has felt a bit "loose" for the past year. Had it checked out at the dealer and they said all fine. It's as though the wheels aren't balanced, but there's no vibration through the steering wheel, and I had them checked and new tyres but no different. It's noticeable when cruising at higher speeds, not any particular speed.

I'm sure it never used to be there, and it's quite subtle so doesn't really bother me, but it doesn't quite feel right. The only things I can think it could be are:

Console bushes: Have had them replaced in the past
The new "non-creak" wishbone bushes: Had those replaced
Unbalanced drive shafts or worn/dry CV joints
    High speed miss-fire

Going for MOT end of the month so if it's something amiss in the front end they'll find it!

Would be good to hear if any one else has this "not quite right at the front end feeling"

The recommended tyre pressures are highlighted on the inside fuel flap door. I tend to keep mine inflated to the higher level as it improves MPG and is better for motorway use.

As for the unsettled motorway ride, if it happens between 60-70mph, and you can't feel through the steering (ie, it vibrates through the chassis), then it could be the rear wheels that are out of balance? Get them checked so it doesn't cause additional wear to suspension components and/or bearings etc. Failing that, it could be a mishaped tyre, usually found on higher mileage cars with knackered shock absorbers, or as a result of skidding which can cause a flat spot on the tyre(s). But if this is the case, you would normally experience juddering at all speeds. Hope this helps?

Hi I have had the wheels balanced and all the tyres are ok shape. I have the standard wheels for an SE Passat and cap states 2.6 which is 38PSI.

I have done this for the front tyres but have put 36PSI in the rear i wondered if you guys with the 2.0 engine are putting the same in front and rear mine is an 05 plate so has the smaller wheels than the new highline ones.

    thanks.

Garck, you were right, had all my tyres replaced the other week (Conti 2s 235/45/17/ 97W XL) and it drives like a dream now, must have been the rears out of balance, I never thought rear wheel balance would make that much difference.
