im in a fix with my cambelt woes ....

rang local audi ******* today to enquire when the cambelt on my late 2005 A6 2.7 tdi quattro sline is due for change , its due its 64k service now.
They told me that it has a chain , and a change is never required !!

I told them that as far as i was aware the engine is similar to that of my previous A4 2.5tdi , and it was due circa 80k ?

To add to my confusion i called my local indy , awesome gti , who were adamant that its a belt and is due at 60k miles ??

im a littelr confused , does anyone have any wors of wisdom pls ??

    many thanks

    Shaun

Engine code is essential here. Initially it appears it is a belt timing system and there are no chains but the two cams are internally gear coupled. The engine code is on a label in the service book or on the ID label in the spare wheel bay.

The engine code is a 3 letter code, eg: AKE , BAU, AJM, etc. If you look in the logbook, there is a 3 leter code folloved by a 5 digit number.

the 2.7 is chain driven but there is a high pressure pump belt and a aux belt. There is no service interval for the belt and it requires no timing position. It just drives the high pressure pump. The timing chain has no replacement interval and its engine out if you wish but the high pressure pump and aux belt is just loosen and fasten lock carrier and replace.Stick with the dealer and not the mentioned place you mentioned as i cant bare my self to type it as there c p and less of the ******* big ears
Why doubt the dealer when the reception will have access to elsa win and desktop as well as etka and not to mention they see these cars every day.

cheers guys, i had actually booked it in tentatively for monday , but as the service dept of awesome gti assured me it was a belt not a chain , im questioning their morals !!!

i am reading you right A8tech , would you not recomend awesome GTI in irlam ????? and would you stick to the main dealer ? i have to say any supposed specialist who does not know if a engine is chain / belt driven cant be much cop .

    cheers

4f A6 has never supported a timing belt on any of the v engines and the 2.5 tdi unit never made it to the 4f a6.The 3.0 and 2.7 are fantastic and only a few issue compared to the 2.5 tdi problems with the pumps and the turbos plus the mechanical wear and blocked engine breather. As elsa looks for specific vehicle details and time and miles covered the service technician will be presented with the service items required at the visit according to time/distance but to the best of my knowledge the pump belt has no interval but a visual inspection will be carried out.I have yet to see one fail and the worst case would be loss of fuel supply.

i have to agree that the 2.7 engine is a vast improvement on the 2.5tdi A4 i used to run , seems much smoother .
One thing is the oil consumption , which seems non existant whereas the 2.5 used to use a pint a month even after 40000 miles !
Would you think it wise to steer clear of the indy mentioned that thinks a belt change is in order ???

    cheers
