There appears to be a common problem with the 1.6 04 Golf FSI where the engine sometimes stutters/splutters usually at motorway speeds or navigating roundabouts. When the engine is turned off for a couple of minutes and then restarted the problem disappears for while.

The problem can be very infrequent but in some situations very dangerous since when it occurs the car looses all acceleration capabilities and struggles to achieve high revs even in a lower gear.

Im sure there must be someone on here that could solve this problem once and for all and I would be very grateful of any advice.

    Thanks in advance.

get your car diagnosed, it could be your coil pack. I had a silimar problem, my car would shake for no reason and then when im pressing down on the pedal it would not gain the power properly. RAC came down and told me it was the coil pack.

However i did get the engine light straight away and it was flashing.

    ********************** I AM NO EXPERT .************************

im pretty sure power loss issue is coil pack failiure. BUT before splashing out. Read about "dry joints" in fuel pump/ecu relays located elswhere on these forums.(perticually audi 80/100) if u know what your lookin 4 u could fix this 1 4 pence.
NEXT. check air induction pipe 4 leaks. unmetered air gettin in engine will limit performace as much as a bad Mass airflow meter. the MAF sensor can b cleaned but read "how 2" before u try.
Duff Coolant temp sensors cause many runnin issues..cheap 2 replace
Get your throttle body checked out on vagcom. if the servo motor in it is playing up it will adopt a mind of its own and confuse any good garage. these r not cheap 2 replace .
coil pack is prime suspect i replaced mine myself and i have no power loss issues any more
