Hello mate, did you sort this out?? I have the same problem on my 1995 golf cabrio 2.0L (ADY) and its driving me nuts ! it seems to be worst between 2700 and 4000 rpm and it will only rev up to 5000 rpm!! . Apparently it had also been garaged for a long time before I bought it!! Any help would be much appreciated!!

    Thanx!!

Not too sure but perhaps a good clean out of the throttle body is in order. A garage won't charge much to do this.

Sounds more like a missfire to me, possibly an arcing lead, plugs, dissy cap etc.

Also I remember Crasher saying that the Coils and Distributor Hall senders are very prone to failure on these aswell.

hello there, read your post and from experience I would suggest looking toward the ignition coil as this can lead to juddering on acceleration due to the coil breaking under load, just an idea but had the same problem myself and one new coil later no problem

    Best luck Meyrick

    Mr Golfo

Your car has a misaligned distributor. This is common after a timing belt. The distributor is so far out that the spark is jumping to the wrong cap pole at high revs. You need to take it to a garage that knows how to realign the distributor on an ADY/AGG engine using a diagnostic system such as VAG-COM in Measuring blocks 08, Display group 007.

It is very easy to do. Start the engine and allow it to idle. Go into Engine 01, Measuring Blocks 08 and then Display Group 007. Look at the figure in Display Zone 1 and this should be between 57 and 60 or 1 and in Display Zone 2 the figure should be between 5 and 8. These should be wrong on your car so with the engine still running (watch your hands on the cooling fan), loosen the distributor and turn it until the values in Display Zones 1 and 2 are correct.

There are two problems you are likely to come across. Firstly, there may be two metal pins either side of the distributor bolt (these are not visible unless you remove the clamp) and one of these often has to be snapped off to allow the setting to be performed and this is perfectly acceptable, even recommended in the VW manual. The second problem is that the distributor may be solidly corroded into the block and this can take some serious effort to release. I soak the base in releasing fluid for as long as possible and use a pair of vice grips around the neck of the distributor to gradually work it free.
