So we agree 75w90 is the correct viscosity gear oil for the 6-speed manual....

    Ok, next questions

Will any fully synthetic 75w90 gear oil be sufficient?
Is there a VAG branded oil?
If VW don't have their 'own' gear oil, does anyone know which brand VW use?

Sorry for all the questions but I've been trying to get this info for weeks.

    Thanks again.
Fully Syn is what you need! VAG don't have there own gear oil! I contacted FUCH in stoke to see if they were the OEM supplier (Fuch engine oil is filled at factory)

I also contacted Opie oils and had a chat to the "oil Man" and was advised to stick with VAG part number as the Redline oil I was going to buy doesn't work well with VAG (selecting 1st gear when cold is difficult)

The bottle that I got from Audi looks similar to the Castrol bottle! But I'd stick to the VAG part number as I had a lot of conflicting advice on here! But up to you in the end.

In addition to this, I've found more info on the 6-speed manual (code HDV) as well as a few other things:

    http://www.bitnet.ro/vw/servicedata/...ec=BKD&lang=en

According to this the correct spec gear oil is - G 052 178. This refers to "gearbox oil SAE 75w".

    This just adds more confusion!

Also, something else which I've never been able to find out is if the gear oil needs to be GL4 or GL5. I've been told not to use GL5 in a GL4 spec'd box. However, some gear oils are both GL4 AND GL5! Does anyone know about this?

All of this is driving me mental! If my local VW dealer wasn't so **** they would have replaced this for me like I asked them!! Aghh!

I've narrowed the search down to 2 oils:

    Fuchs Titan Sintofluid FE 75w (GL-4). Meets the following specs: G 052 178 A2, G 052 512 A2, G 055 726 A2.

    Fuchs Titan Sintofluid 75w80 (GL-5). Meets the following specs: G 052 911 A1/A2, G 052 171 A1/A2.

    So which is it....?

I've narrowed the search down to 2 oils:

    Fuchs Titan Sintofluid FE 75w (GL-4). Meets the following specs: G 052 178 A2, G 052 512 A2, G 055 726 A2.

As it meets the G 052 178. spec of your handbook! If it says a GL4 and not a GL5...

I had loads of problem finding out the correct oil as I told you when you PM me...

Try giving VAG UK a ring and ask for the tech guys! they should be able to give you the correct advice...

    Fuchs Titan Sintofluid 75w80 (GL-5). Meets the following specs: G 052 911 A1/A2, G 052 171 A1/A2.

    So which is it....?

    I'd go for this one - Fuchs Titan Sintofluid FE 75w (GL-4). Meets the following specs: G 052 178 A2, G 052 512 A2, G 055 726 A2. If it says in your handbook G 052 178 A2(which is either 0.5 ltr or 1Ltr bottles) GL4 spec then I'd go for that!

Give VAG UK a ring and ask for the tech guys, they should be able to give you the correct answer and put your mind at ease. There is a guy on here called "A8 tech" He's a master tech for VAG and very helpful! If he doesn't know the answer no one will...

It doesn't actually say this in my manual, it was on a website giving tech info, so I guess it could be wrong.... not 100% sure.

The thing that gets me is the fact that if a gearbox isn't compatible with a GL-5 fluid, then how can a gear oil be both GL-4 and GL-5 compliant, as a lot of gear oils now are? Surely it's either GL-4 or GL-5? My logic tells me that if the chemicals in a GL-5 oil can damage some metals in a transmission spec'd for GL-4 oil only, then how can a gear oil be rated with both specs? Or have I got this completely wrong...?

Thanks for all your help with this Tim. I've rang 4 local dealerships who've all given me different specs..... just to add to the confusion an' all! I wasn't aware there was a VAG UK technical department; I thought there was just sales and marketing etc. If there is though, they will be my next stop and hopefully clear this mess up, so to speak.

WHY DOES THE HANDBOOK IN THE GLOVEBOX OF THE VEHICLE NOT STATE THE DAMN SPEC FOR GEAR OIL!?!?!
