My names Jeremy and I have a 1999 V reg A3 1.8T petrol. The car is suffering running problems and has been for some time as i cant solve the problem . The car acts as if it is being starved of fuel as it jumps at around 2000 revs. It also can stall without notice when slowing down to a junction. dinostics show that it was the air mass meter and then the throttle body unit to which I have had new airmass meter changed a 3 times and also a refurbished replacement throttle body unit put on and it still has the problem. do i need to get someone to reset the computer under the bonet or does it not make a difference? i know little about cars but this problem is costing me a fortune and i dont know what to do next. The car has been into an audi / vw specialist and also a main dealer - bills are totting up and patients are running low - anyone out there who can help pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese

I've heard that when the throttle body has been replaced/refurbished it needs to be reset using diagnostic software. Do you know if it was indeed reset ?

No it was not reset as i put it on myself. I bought a second hand one from an audi spare parts place cos the audi garage wanted £475 to put one on. Does audi have to reset the computer or can another garage do it aslong as they have the software? what i dont understand is how the car will run better simply by changing what the computer thinks. i sound like an ungratefull git but please be assured am not as this helps a great deal. Thanks for your time paul its appreciated.

If the car has recognised a throttle body problem then it will be stored as a fault code. The computer will then be telling the car different things, hence why you may get running problems.

Audi don't have to do this, an experienced independent specialist would probably be able to do this. If you prefer to do it yourself, you could buy yourself a VAG-COM diagnostics cable from the forum member Eshrules-Enterprises and buy the fully registered software from Ross-Tech for $99. You would then have the equipment to carry out this procedure yourself.

The page in the link explains in greater detail why it has to be done and how, so check it out.

We are all here to help on this forum, if you're lucky one of the independent specialist sponsors may offer some advice.
